M6805 keyboard issues...

Hey guys...Ive had my m6805 for almost a year now and finally got my first major problem (aside from the cracking hinge which hasnt bothered me much). My keyboard is messed...every now and then its like my function key is stuck down; but its not. The screen will dim at random..and my keys stop working so I cant type anything...sometimes dashes, (-), come up at random. Anyone know what could possibly do this?.... I have no viruses and everything else is healthy as can be! ;(

The keyboard has an "interpreter" chip built in that can sometime go bad, also you may need to reseat the cable.

On another note, your bios could have become corrupt but this is extremely rare. Try reseating first, then try replacing the keyboard.

Hi, Dave

I would call emachines and discuss the situation with them. If you are under the one year warranty then they will replace it for free.

Don't start tearing into the notebook unless your warranty is done.

If you think it's out of warranty, even then you still might get emachines help if it's not your fault. The keyboard is ~$165 US. This sure sounds like a keyboard problem in which it will need to be replaced but first talk with emachines.

thanks..it is out of warranty which is why i was hoping i could fix it for cheap. if i bang the keyboard with my angry fists (which happens several times throughout the course of the day) then it is temporarily fixed for several minutes. haha.

You cannot replace the chip it is a part of the keyboard assembly. The best advice I can give you is to try reseating the cable and possible clean the contacts on the ribbon while your at it. If that does not work, replace the keyboard.

Adeal on ebay has them often. Do a search once a week for a m520. The keyaboard is the same as yours. There are also many other arima models that are the same.

For around $100-175 there is an entire base with a keyboard and lots of other parts. I feel it would be worth it to buy the entire thing for just the keybaord. This way you can either sell the other stuff, or keep it for spare parts.

reseating keyboard cables

How do you reseat the cable and check the contacts on the ribbon? Take the laptop apart and remove the keyboard??

I used your replacing ram guide compman55 to remove my keyboard and reseat the cable. It seems to be working now...time will tell if its going to hold up or only be a temporary fix again. Fingers are crossed..thanks for your help..

Function key stuck on - solution

I had this problem on my Sager 5680.

The problem was that the NumLk key was on. To switch it off on my system, I had to press Fn and the NumLk key at the same time. After that, it worked fine.

I don't think this is your problem, but I'm just adding the solution for the record.
