ATI drivers for Linux

Thread Starter
Has anyone installed the normal ATI Radeon 9600 LINUX drivers on their 5680/8890? I'm wondering if they will actually work and I was looking for some feedback.
They work.

Did anyone ever get this to work

I'm installing gentoo.
I got emerge xfree to work.
Now, I want to configure using xf86config and I don't know what to type in.

I have a 5680
ATI 9600 Radeon 128M

Anyone else have any success?

Type x and then hit tab about 3 times, and you will get a list of commands, one or two of them are programs to configure X.

Its tab 2x and that will only work if you are running BASH - which of course you should be

Nonsense, anyone who knows anything should run zsh, their auto-completion system trashes bash completely

Got it

Cool feature.

Now that It's configured I get the message.
DRIScreenInit failed!

Still stuck. What did I do wrong?

Another Config Tool

I also found that there is another config tool that begins with f
fglrxconfig
the fglrx is for the ATI firegl drivers. fglrxconfig will create an Xf86config file for you.

when i try to install the linux drivers from ATI i get a conflict fglrx-glc-4.3.0-3.2.8 with libxfree86-4.3-23mdk. should i force it?
Yeah - you have to force it - it replaces some of the libs. Bit of a bummer - but there ya go.

touchpad and mouse wig out now
You are gonna have to make sure that your XF86 config is correct man - use the fglrxconfig to generate the file then view it manually and make sure that it picked up your touchpad etc correctly - I always use a mouse in linux so I cant say I have much experience in this ... check out this thread

Hi

I am looking at getting that laptop too, same as trbrophy. I would be running prolly SuSE9 or RedHat since I will to connect to many enterprise application (ie Exchange).

My only concern, and what prevented to buy that laptop, was because of the video card.

Now I read that it actually works? How much pain to get it working? does 2D accel. work? 3D? Only using the ATI "Desktop" version of the driver? I shouldn't be playing a whole lot of games, but I wanna make sure the 1600.1200 UXGA resolution works fine at least.

Please tell me more...

Thanks a lot.

The ATI drivers are reasonably easy to install. There can sometimes be a problem with an undecalred function but I posted a solution to that on these boards ... I can find it for you if needs be. 3d support is good (not as good as windows but good) and 2daccel is fair (not as good as DRI project, which unfortunately does not support the 9600 right now). I can play UT2003 at 1600x1200 with high settings quite easily if that gives you an idea of how well it works.

Dear Friends -
Since many of us will now have the 9600 we needa sticky with exact instructions as to how to get the ati drivers with 3d accel working in various distros.
As soon as I get my box, I hope to be able to do Suse and/or debian, but I think it might be better if one of the real gurus just wrote a simple "how to" so linux on the latest 5680 does not turn into an all week science project.

Or worse, we end up dual booting.........

Hey, how about a table with links to 2 files.. a kernel binary and an xf86config? Kernels are the same across lunix distributions, right? And XFree would be the same.. so at worst someone would have to edit some of the paths (maybe for fonts and such) in the config file.

Like this..

4780 XF86Config Kernel Readme
5680 XF86Config Kernel Readme
8890 XF86Config Kernel Readme

i got the pc drivers working in mandrake 9.2 but then when I got the sound card working my 3d vid performance went to **** (5680)

Are you using the alsa drivers - and if so are they the correct ones. In response to the need for a howto when I get home tonight I will post my howto and a copy of my XF86Config-4 file. Hopefully that will be a start for a lot of people.
