i was introduced to the glories of Knoppix thanks to the folks at thebroken. only problem is, knoppix seems to have been shutdown thanks to our good friends of the EU, and their newly enacted patent laws. does anyone know where i might be able land a copy of this bad boy?

or on that front page with the warning, click the link 'KNOPPIX'; it'll take you to the old index.

Just hit ENTER at the boot# prompt. That's what I do, and it loads up fine (we do have the same 8887-V machines, gatz).

Of course, I am using Knoppix 3.2... so if you have a different one, you may want to look for an iso of 3.2

This is my first linux try. Well I wanted to use it on my lappy, but cant get it to work with my dlink 650+ wireless card. I found a few open source drivers but no luck. Anyone have any insight?

Getting linux to work with wireless cards seems to be tricky, at best. I have had no such luck (though I am a linux n00b, and have been for about 8 years).

Actually, here at work, we have a lot FEWER problems getting our wireless cards to work under Linux than under, say, XP. On my 5660, for example, the Orinoco card continues to crash my windows side...yet works beautifully on the Linux side.

I can only speak about RedHat, but their GUI wrapper to the wireless configuration files is quite good...and you can always hand-edit the files quite nicely!

Well, you've run into the 840M ram barrier! Common problem, just type boot mem=840M to get it working. After the black screen, you still get X-windows running, right?

wifi

Is your Dlink card a 802.11g ? is it 54 Mbits ?

If so, such cards do not work yet correctly under linux. Try this link:

All other wifi works, as stated by someone else, flawlessly on linux.

Hope that helps.

I've very recently updated my acx100 howto page for Linux with a pre-compiled solution for Knoppix 3.3 (dated 11-14-2003), this is a page intended for people new to Linux who want to get their acx100 cards going, If you're using the Knoppix 3.3 "live" CD, give it a try and please let me know how it goes. It's been tested both on my own Thinkpad and my wife's Vaio notebook.

Wow. Will the Linksys Wireless-G PCMCIA Card (WPC54G) work? If it will, this is bloody amazing.

I'm using a 5670 and I run into a black screen after loading minikernel or whatever - tried every option available and can't get it to work - It's the latest version of knoppix-std and I read somewhere someone had it working with the 5670 but I can't figure out how - help would be appreciated?

I just burned a Knoppix disc a couple hours ago. I booted my 8886 with it without a single problem! No firewire hangups or anything. I've got a Truemobile (orinoco gold) 1150 Knoppix recognized it and I was able to set up it all up and get an IP from my router but I couldn't get out onto the internet. I'm going to try disabling WEP and see if that was the problem, I'm thinking it was.

I got a list of mirrors from Knoppix from Knoppix.org version 3.3

Yeah, Knoppix is by no means dead (yet ). That whole thing was just a warning. The latest release is 3.3 11-19-2003

BTW, the only issue I currently have with Knoppix is getting my wireless card to see the internet. I've gotten it to connect to my router and get an IP. I've verified with another pc that my router sees it correctly. I believe my WEP may be interfering for some reason and that's preventing it from accessing the internet?

Until I get this working I won't be able to proceed with my Gentoo install
