Dell Chat: My name is x but you can call me y

Why do they always do this? Whenever there is a Dell chat, I have always come across that statement of "My name is x but you can call me y"

I find this very silly.

Yeah, I think it's silly too, and really I think it's degrading to the csr to ask them to do that. Buy Indian's are very humble, so they problably don't mind. Dell has them do it because their real names are so unfamiliar and hard to pronounce. I always make a point to use their real name.

When I worked for Apple tech support we had a call center in Bangalor, India they all had extremely crazy names so they each picked their own American code names..It was helerious some of the ones I heard at Apple.

I agree, it's extremely degrading. I make a point to always copy/paste their name and use the real one. While TYPING, there's no excuse not to call them by their real name...it's not like speaking to someone that's hard to understand.

also the new earthlink advert. that was playing on tv recently. Of the two tech. employees one was an indian named bell. ya right, bell.
ok in chat i can understand. i dont want to type 20 characters to type his last name, or have half the space in the chat session taken up by his name.

I thought it was ridiculous also. I asked one of the reps how you go from Hajiaberdaber to Chad. HE said it was easier for people to use his new name...I said its your name use it...Im waiting for one to say Hi my name is Hajiaberdaber but you can call me George W........

yeah them dell chat people are fun to talk to. Sure, they don't help you with your computer issues; but, if you ever have problems with your life, you can bet they will be your crying shoulder!

Ha ha, like that one dude that kept asking for concessions in chat and bringing up different stuff. And the CSR kept saying "I'd feel the same way if that happened to me." That must be in the training. It does tend to sedate people.

The dell chat support people are very sociable. Tell them how life is treating you. Hey, you can even talk about religion and stuff. Ask them their views and all. They will be there for you! Don't expect support for your computer, though.

Wow.... did you just stereotype an entire 1.15 billion people or what?

As for me, those that are from India that I have spoken with on the phone have been extremely fluent in English. I haven't had a problem understanding any of them, and they have been most helpful in resolving my problem.

Honestly, what companies out there today offer tech support that is consistently at the highest level? Precious few. I'm quite happy with Dell.

Funny, I don't see any responces here realizing the reality of the ingorance of the average American moron. Americans live in a small cultural bubble. Dell's pretty smart to have seen the need to Americanize and sugar coat their support team for it's generally self-centered and condescending-by-nature consumer base.

You obviously didn't read the entire thread, then.

I didn't mean too. I meant to say something complimentary, though that could still be referred to as stereotyping. I know a lot of Indians, I work with a lot of Indians and I've worked in India, and on the whole they seem significantly more humble than Americans. Oh, there I go again, stereotyping. At least it's only a half a billion or so this time.
