I have 2 XPS2s with LG screens, one 3 weeks old and one 1 week old. Both have the same amount of grain, and the newer one has a bit more light leakage. Both have more grain than any of the glossy screens I've seen in the store.

So that comes down to opinion, experience, and perhaps varying levels of distinct observation. It also appeared that people with less than perfect eyesight did not observe the phenomenon.

Not sure how many but it seems like more than 1 person has recently gotten a replacement LG that had seen the sparkle before and now had an LG which they report has no sparkle. One of the theories of the cause of the sparkle on the new screens is that they just took old 9200 screens which had the sparkle caused by the antiglare coating and added the gloss coating and used these in the 9300s and XPSs. In which case it seems logical they would run out of these eventually and start using screens with only the gloss coating and not the additional antiglare coating. So this may be happening now.

The statement from Dell and others that the effect is standard on all screens is pure bullshit. I buy 1 or 2 new laptops every year. Never seen it before. When shopping I spend plenty of time looking at every laptop in several stores. Never seen it before. They may all have something you could call sparkle, but only the Dell 9300 has had anything that proves to reduce the quality and and viewability that could be called sparkle. My Treo 650 doesn't sparkle like it, my 30inch LCD HDTV doesn't sparkle like it, my 19inch LCD monitor doesn't sparkle like it, my Sony A170 17 inch gloss screen notebook doesn't sparkle like. My satin sheets sparkle a lot like it, though. Please folks, wait a while before posting to NBF after consuming crack.

Deutch, where is your house, I'd like to see your non-sparkly LG.
Right On !!!! (except it;s the pixel matrix structure layout, not the screen coating thats causing problems)

Vanco, you desperately need a peak and trough. Be happy for those who doesn't have sparkles. My LG screen is happy for having no sparkles whatsoever. It is possible.

He he he, my random level is therapeutic....

Anyway, yeah I am happy for those who don't have any sparkles. I hope that I will get a replacement with no sparkles also....then I can join you "lucky" folks.

My 9300 screen is what?

An LG with sparkles and two stuck pixels..one red and one blue.

For those who wish to attempt to see this, type in www.google.com, and look at the white screen. You will see a "rainbow" effect on the white background...I sure do on mine at least.

After 34 days and NINE customer service reps, I have a replacement 9300 arriving tomorrow. I guess we will dispel a few myths about Dell running out of LG sparkly screens or replacing with a different model LCD.

What screen shows that type of detail on the Dell website? When I look at my order, the description of my LCD screen looks nothing like that:

17 inch True Life Wide Screen UXGA for Inspiron 9300

edit**

It is probably in the Invoicing Solutions section, which of course, is down right now.

Well I will be able to chime into this debate tomorrow hopefully when I have my XPS 2 in my hands. But my impatience causes me to ask this anyway:

When working on a white background, for instance when you are doing word processing and other applications where you have black text set against a white background, does the "Sparkles" debate pertain to having the "whites" look gray rather than solid white?

Because I am just not sure what you folks mean by "sparkles" or "shimmer". Sounds to me like this might actually be a NICE effect for the screen, if and only if, it DOES NOT make the white background look less white and the black text look less black. Because that would drive me NUTS since I am a writer and will be doing a lot of writing!!

Are these "Sparkles" some sort of 3D effect for enhancing the look of games as well as movies? Or am I way off base here. Well I guess I will see tomorrow when I have the machine.

I agree, never saw any choise. I guess cause I have the shiny screen its an LG? Anyway, my D600 has the non-shine surface, and I don't like it. The shiny screen is better for me, mine looks awsome.

Well, i finally got my replacement system with a samsung screen and I must say that the LG has a better advantage over the samsung screen.

Samsung Pros:

less sparkles

Samsung Cons:

Really bad light leakage
Color is not as good as the LG screen IMO

I will keep the LG screen just because it has better colors and has very little light leakage.

Inspiron9200 - Did you receive a replacement system because you had complained about your screen? Dell is currently sending me out a replacement because of the screen. I'm worried that the new one will be crap too. If it is can I ship them back the newer one and keep my current one?
