The 4080 & 4780 discussion thread - Page 2

yo i just looked it up, but its the desktop counterpart of the m648fx 963, it does support hyper threadin, b u t not dual channel---the 655's do.

As im still torn between the 5680 and the 4780 i was just wondering-- if you dont have dual channel, is it really worth having a 800 fsb (i thought the memory had to run as fast as the fsb in order for it to work at potential. ie. even a 533fsb is to fast for a 400 mhz single channel memory).

don't know if i go for the 4780, ill just bump up the processor (5680=2.8 4780=3.2) to make up for the bottleneck

I'd like to see a DVI video out (and DVI->VGA) in all new models.

Hopefully, they'll upgrade that to the 655 chipset which DEFINATELY supports HT.

This is from SIS:
Host & Memory & AGP Controller integrates a high performance host interface for Intel Pentium 4 HT 800 processor, a high performance memory controller, a AGP interface, and SiS MuTIOL 1G Technology connecting w/ SiS963L MuTIOL 1G Media IO.

But it's no dual channel. I think the 655tx is the way to go.

Hey, what's the difference between a mini firewire port and a regular firewire port?

I have an ipod from last year, one of the second generation ones which I had to buy a firewire card for my PC to support it but I'm looking at the new 4080 for when I go to college and so I won't have my desktop anymore and last year's ipod doesn't support USB. Will the mini Firewire port work or do I have to go out and buy an adapter to make it work?

Thanks,

On a mini firewire port the attached device needs its own power source. On a regular firewire port the device can get power from the firewire port.

It will work, but you cannot charge the iPOD via the port (of course, I can't on my 6-pin port on my 8887-V).

Anyway, you should have received an adapter with the iPOD (6-pin to 4-pin) - it's a small adapter about an inch or so...

Still, you can use the wall-plug/fw thing to charge, but sync your iPOD with the lappy and elfpod (or whatever PC software you use).

does any one know how much the 4780 will cost?
Baddddd question dude, very bad question. In this forum you will get price theories on new releases that would make any conspiracy freak happy.

Just wait until the end of the month and you will have the real deal on pricing.

Wish I could give you better news, sorry.......

Paintable

Will the 4080 or 4780 have the option of being custom painted?
Does any one know?
I emailed PCTorque a few days ago... there may be an option to have it custom painted, they are working on expanding their models which they offer the custom painting on and the 4780 would be likely to have this done they said.

swappable batteries?

Hi all, I am a long time listener first time caller........ Ok, ok, I have been quiet up until now trying to get my money together and reading what you guys are up to in an order to help me decide which sager to buy.......too damn hard! Any one have ideas if the 4780 will have dual batteries or will be able to be hot-swapped? By looking at the specs (some of it is gooble-de-ga (how do you spell that anyway?)), what will its performance be in comparison to the 5680..... And before you tell me wait wait wait....I am waiting, but I am sick of it!

Anyone heard any updates? Still debating between the 4780 and the 8890 with price being the major deciding factor. But that UXGA screen on the 8890 is making it look more and more appealing

The 4080 will most likely be cheaper. Thanks to it using a different (cheaper) chipset then the 5680. This also applies for the 4780, only thing that might up its price is that delicious 17" screen.

More bang for your buck though.
