Yes, 8890 systems are available with UXGA - Page 2

This is the same UXGA screen as the 8887 had, and this is the same screen Alienware uses. This is not just a bigger version of the 5680 as there is no such screen.

Sorry, I missed that before!

Bugger - oh well back to the 5680

Thanks for the reply. But as far as the screen is concerned, that's too bad. Still, I'm sure the UXGA would be a great option.

Any reason why they can't get the higher quality UXGA's in 16" size?

I know that people have talked about the quality of the UXGA on the 8887 and the SXGA of the new 8890, but I'm eager to hear more on the difference in quality.

For those who have owned the 8887 with the UXGA, and perhaps have seen the quality of the SXGA on the new 8890 - what do you think?

Granted, there can be improvements, but is the 8887 quality UXGA screen really nice?

Nobody makes a 16" UXGA screen with the wide angle view. If they did, we would carry them.

This is the best screen they can get for these systems. It is a very nice screen, but I will let others tell you since they will sound more unbiased.

The main difference between these screens is the native resolutions: SXGA=1280*1024 and UXGA=1600*1200. Many people prefer the native resolution of the UXGA.

Laura,

If you ugrade to the uxga this could add on extra time to your shipment correct?
The screens aren't even in stock yet, so yes, it would delay it your order until they arrive. Like Adam said, it should be in the next few days.

Please let me know if there is anything else!

Anybody out there who has compared the 16" UXGA with the 15" UXGA side by side?

I'm sure I'll be happy enough with the 15" (which will be here Friday), but that extra inch and a TV tuner would be sweet!

(Laura, I promise not to think of you as biased!)

As soon as i heard about the 8890 UXGA i changed up my order.

But as i later read its the same screen as the 8887. Does it have ghosting problems and will this affect playing/viewing games???

I sold my UXGA 8887v that I LOVED because I was not using it at the time.

I then got some work I needed a laptop for & ordered an 8890. I was pissed that the UXGA was not available, but I needed a large screen so I ordered it anyway.

I have had the 8890 for a month or so & I am not pissed anymore. The 8890 screen is fabulous, I do not miss my UXGA screen at all. I would not swap my 8890 screen for the UXGA even if it was available as a free upgrade, I LOVE this screen!!

To add to this, this is the best laptop LCD I have ever seen period. My wife has a Powerbook & my Dad has a Dell with a 16" UXGA screen & the 8890 is better than either of those hands down.

It really is a personal-preference thing. I play Battlefield 1942 (Desert Combat) constantly (well, it's the only game I really play, when I can). And while it's not as responsive as a CRT monitor, it is nonetheless an excellent LCD.

I didn't realize how nice it was until I started using/viewing other people's laptops (my wife's compaq, my boss's IBM, a collegue's Dell, etc.) - the 8887's UXGA 16.1" screen is awesome! Maybe not as awesome as the wide-view of the 5680, but still awesome enough for me!

Thanks Myrkat.

So for 8890 the SXGA would be more responsive (less ghosting)
whilst the the UXGA would have the wider viewing angles and higher res (with a little more ghosting).

I will do a fair bit of gaming and the UXGA is an extra $100.
How does the ghosting compare, and so is it worth it?

I was under the impression that the SXGA had much better angles than the UXGA, as well as better rise/fall times.

I've just changed my order to UXGA because desktop space is very important to me, but if I was only using my 8890 for gaming I'd stick with the SXGA because it's just a better screen.

tough...tough...tough... decisions...decisions...decisions...

Without actually USING both screens side-by-side, it is a tough call.

I think the SXGA has better properties, just less pixels (and overall size?) than the UXGA screen. I wanted the biggest I could get, and at the time the 16.1" UXGA was it (vs. the 15.7"? SXGA+)...

Yeah, been speaking to Tom@pc and the viewing angles of the UXGA for the 8890 (same as the UXGA for the 8887) would be "...about the same as on the SXGA screen..." for the 8890.

Since the desktop space insnt as imporant to me as the lcd responsiveness i think that the SXGA will be better suited to my needs (and save me $$$).

If i only i could see the two run side by side...

I noticed reading the news that it looks like the sxga's are getting upgrades to sxga+ too? along with the option to upgrade to a uxga.. too bad it isnt a 16.1 UXGA.. think iwill skip the uxga option... sounds like the other lcd is a great screen.... ordering my laptop tonight or tommorow morning as soon as my direct deposit shows in my bank account Yeeha.. still trying to decide on color.. noticed the chameleon colors went up 30 bucks too.. ohh well.. I can handle it...

I thought it was the same uxga as the 8887, isnt this 16.1"?
Yeah, going by what Tom says the 8890 UXGA will be the same as the 8887 UXGA.

I havent read different anywhere else,
but i havent looked.

I'm aware of the difference in native resolution, I was just wondering about the quality. But thanks for the input! I wouldn't take you as being biased. I also wouldn't doubt that it's a nice screen. Just seems odd how these LCD manufacturers choose to do things.

Any chance we could see a picture of an 8890 SXGA and an 8890 UXGA side by side, when you get the UXGA's in? Along with some head-on shots, maybe include some angle shots as well?

Although there have been a couple of remarks, does anyone have anymore input about the difference in screen responsiveness between the SXGA and UXGA?

I was just talking to my son who is an avid gamer(I play games a little, but nothing like him)

He is playing football games right now since it is football season & he is a first string Wide Receiver for his High School football team. After football he will go back to MOA, Battlefiel 1942, Counterstrike etc)

I asked him whether he preferred the 8887v UXGA screen or the 8890 for gaming. He said the 8887 was really nice but he definitely likes the 8890 screen better for gaming.

The SXGA screen is definitely easier to read default fonts on also, so alot depends on what the main use of the computer will be.

Believe me, anyone who buys the SXGA screen for gaming will NOT be disappointed
