Any nc8230 owners out there...

...especially Canadian owners ? I've been looking at this model and I'm a bit confused by the spec on HP's website. This unit has an ATI x600 but the rest is murky. In the overview section it says this laptop is available with the x600 with 64mb or 128mb memory, however in the Quick Spec's PDF there is no version of the nc8230 that has 128mb of video memory, every model is spec'd with 64mb. There doesn't seem to be anywhere in the check-out process to specifiy which video card you want.

So my question is; has anyone (especially Canucks) bought this model with an ATI x600 and 128mb video memory ? If so, how did you specify the video card you wanted ? Did you have to call and talk to someone ? If this model doesn't come with a 128mb video solution I guess I'll be forced to buy the next model up, the nw8240, which has a true workstation card, the FireGL v5000. I'd rather not as it's pricier and I'm not sure if the FireGL handles games very well.

Thanks for any help

I believe the 128 MB version is only available in Build Your Own models in the US.

Fire GL V5000 should be slightly faster than ATI X700.

I estimated the performance of ATI FireGL V5000 here:

Thanks for your performance comparisons, perhaps the 8240 would be a good choice. I'm a CG artist, and while the primary purpose of this rig wasn't going to be work related, I'd feel somewhat comforted knowing I could install Softimage XSI or Maya and it would perform. I think I'll call this week and see what a memory upgrade is going to set me back.

Thanks
