Search Nazis

I know this isn't a problem with just this forum but what's with the search nazi attitude lately? The search functions on most forums pretty much blow. The count on simple keywords which just doesn't work well. You rely on the original poster to have used the exact same wording that you did. God forbid they are a wanna be haxor and use stupid 1337 speak you'll never find it.

Forums like this are only successful because they attract a constant flow of new users. With that constant flow will come questions that have probably been answered before. Yes this means you might have to read the same question again. Get over it. You can pretty much guess what it is by the thread title. If it bothers you then don't click it. Not that difficult. If it really just annoys you to no end then why don't you put that energy towards developing a proper FAQ. Most of the newbie questions would be address. Items such as HD speed and screen issues come to mind here. At least try to answer the question or perhaps link to an existing thread. Don't just be a prick and say "this has been covered before, use the search."

Just an observation.

Thank you...if you don't mind, I will be copy/pasting this in every forum I visit.

I HATE when people take the chicken $hit road and tell people to use the search when they could either answer the question (since they are so intelligent) or simply not post.

for you.

What about an FAQ?

Well this is a perfect example.

The FAQ is not linked in this forum. The forum that it is in isn't visited as often as this one by owners of 9300/XPS2. It's also buried in a bunch of stickies.

Pretty good FAQ though. I didn't even know it was there..............

Because of the poor search functionality of this forum, you are often forced to enter ridicuously simple search keys to get any results. This "any" is usually "many" consisting of repeat posts that the user has to scan, and most likely read, to find what he's looking for. This wastes alot of time.

Just an observation.

do a search !!! this has been discuss before!

I try to help, but I don't have time to link to threads where the same thing was discussed multiple times. Also, most of the times the newbies dont read the faq, where most of their questions have already been asked.

Like already said, if somehow the seach function could be improved, it'd make a lot of peoples lives easier.

Simply not replying to a newbs question is certainly a valid option. It is far better than saying "use the search" and nobody will have any problem with that. You don't need to justify yourself. No worries.

A FAQ that isn't present in the section or is buried among waaayyyy too many stickies is fairly useless. Hard to blame the newb for not using it in this case.

From my experience, you can usually avoid that kind of response by doing any search beforehand. If the results comes up empty, then usually no one will point out to you "do a search first".

The chicken $hit approach? The reason people say to use the search feature is because more than likely the question has already been answered. Why is the search so nice? Because you can IMMEDIATELY find an answer which will more than likely completely answer your question. Not only does this benefit the readers from seeing a post that has been answered 100 times before, it helps the poster because they do not have to wait for a response. Using the search feature also keeps common questions from clogging up the forum. Sorry if you disagree with this but it's pretty common etiquette for internet forums.

this is funny, i was just about to respond to another "need laptop for collage"......the collAge was on purpose. i was gonna post a link to another thread and said to myself....who cares, just give him a short answer and be done with it. i am not really a "veteran" of these boards but i do observe some members tendency to pounce on others for being a "noob". the only threads i would like to see prevented are the "terri shaivo", or the "isnt jesus wonderful?" threads, as they just go nowhere, suck balls and waste time by looking to see what the next "see, i told you so" catch all phrase, qoute or scripture will be. god, i hate religion!

anyhoo, instead of telling someone to use the search, i give them the link to the pertinent thread just to be nice, unless they are religious and then i send them to the rate my poo website.

Sir, I like your attitude!

Often the effort required to give the poster an answer is similar to the effort required to abuse them.

The way i see it, if a thread is boring to you or covering old ground, just ignore it.

We all ask questions that have been answered before.

Otherwise, we can abuse any thread on this forum with the phrase "google it".

Did you actually read the thread before you jumped in head first? It's pretty etiquette to do in an internet forum.

The problem is that the search function on this forum and most others is pretty poor at best. You certainly won't IMMEDIATELY find an answer and it probably won't be a complete answer if you do stumble across something by blind luck. If the search were in fact the end-all then people wouldn't bother writing FAQs in the first place. Your argument is valid only when assuming the search function is as efficient as people say it is.

Now I will agree with you when someone posts say a HD question when there are 2 other threads staring them in the face on the front page. Other than that a newb is kinda on his own most of the time.

The search function works perfectly fine, it just takes two brain cells to choose searching keywords.

I agree...I have no problems using the search function.
I tell ppl to use search if I don't remember the answer but do remember seeing a thread about it. If I know where the thread is I'll link to it.
