M60 vs 5680 - again!

I am in the process of placing a fairly large order with Dell right now for some servers. I have a nice discount coming b/c of some 10% stackable eBay deal I bought and then a 15% off for Small Biz.

So, I'm looking at the M60 vs the Sager 5680. Also, Dell is saying they are giving a $500 discount off of the M60 right now plus my discount - not sure how much of my discount applies.

But, the M60 looks like it is coming up with a total of around $3400 -- minus discounts, I'm around the $2500 mark.

So, if I equipped a 5680 how I wanted, I'd be in the $2500 mark as well.

Does any of you out there have experience with BOTH of these notebooks? I know some have the 5680 and some have the M60 but I'd like to know any thoughts of people who have played with either ... if any exist!!

Or ... any opinions would be great too. I'm in a crunch and not sure if I should buy now or not. It looks like a nice notebook but that 5680 looks great too and I plan on buying it if not the M60.

Thanks. -ot

well, I'll just reply to myself ... I couldn't wait any longer. I had no intention of buying an M60 or 5680 today. However, the 5680 has been ON MY MIND bigtime. But, I took the plunge and bought the M60.

My pricing is this ...
$3,453
(500) Dell Discount
(300) Coupon Discounts (approx 10%)
****** Edit: I messed up and thought I had a 15% off on this and it really didn't apply ****** (My bummer ... Oh well, I still got a good deal on my WHOLE order which was a larger amt)
$2,653 Approx Sub-Total (approx b/c of other stuff in order)
$250 (crucial RAM)

$2,903
$200 TAX (yep, I had to pay this)

$3100 ... my total

EDIT (regarding my original "Good" price I thought I had!)
-- So, Now that I REALLY figured this out, I'm more bummed b/c I thought I had gotten a better deal! DUMMY! So, that 15% didn't apply to this ... still, not too bad. I'd be about $300 +/- less on a 5680 that would be similarly equipped. Yeah, I'm trying to justify it now!!

My system is this:

Pentium® M Processor 1.60GHz 15.4 WUXGA Display
Qty: 1
Unit Price: 3,453.00
Floppy Drive Floppy Drive, Internal/External
Hardware Support Services 3Yr Parts + Onsite Labor (Next Business Day)
Productivity Software Dell Precision Workstation
Operating System Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional, (Service Pack 1)
Memory 256MB, DDR SDRAM Memory (2 DIMMS)
Wireless Networking Intel® PRO/Wireless 2100 WLAN (802.11b,11Mbps) miniPCI Card
Battery 9-Cell Primary Battery
Additional Battery 6-Cell Secondary Modular Battery
Boot Hard Drives 60GB ATA-100 IDE (7200 rpm)
D - Bay Devices 8X DVD plus D-Bay with Software MPEGII
Installation Services No Installation
Personal Networking Dell TrueMobileTM 300 Bluetooth Module
Modular Bay Devices 24-10-24X CDRW
Modem Internal 56K Modem
Graphics Card NVIDIA® Quadro FX Go700™ 4XAGP graphics w/128MB DDR Video Mem

I hope this is a good one ... and I hope the VIDEO CARD is comparable to that ATI 9600 PRO ... which I really seemed to like.

Pete,
sorry you had probs. My experience so far with Dell has been ok. Of course, I haven't really had too many probs with the servers and desktops that I've bought. So, I've been mostly happy.

From a business perspective, they do pretty good on pricing and the server product. I'm sure HPs/Compaqs etc... are worthy as well as they do seem nice- the ones I've worked on. But, I've gone Dell so far and they've been fairly good.

So, I'm kind of hoping that the M60 - being a "workstation" class notebook (hmmm) and more on the "business" side of things that it will be a good choice.

I do have my return and I will use it wisely -- I hope!

Plus, I could give this M60 to my Dad and then get a 5680 so that would be ok too!!

thanks. -ot

okie_tex, I had the 8887, but not the 5680, so I don't have an exact comparison, but either way,

I LOVE my M60

I haven't posted a review yet, been far too busy, but this thing runs like a dream, is absolutely silent, rather lite for its size, and battery life is incredible (3 hours or more run time, less than 40 mins for a full recharge).

Unless you have a bad experience like darkpete, all should be wonderful

Just to let you know too, the moment I received it I reformatted, partitioned the drive and reinstalled windoze and all my apps, not one issue yet. When I attempted this with the 8887 I had a whole string of issues, including needing BIOS updates. So far my experience has been a dream: I wish you the same!

Thanks Neison ... Yeah, I'm hoping this is a good experience too. I'll try to report back and see how the M60 does...

well, i have one so i don't worry about it. But, I really don't think you have too either. I've bought before and just put in the person's name as the company name. Now, from what i hear - if the M60 is on the home/home office side - you might not have to pay sales tax. but they might not give you that option for it - i don't know.

when i asked them they said you need to provide some kind of tax code. Is this true?

Hmmm. Maybe so - I don't recall. I've ordered business stuff before from them so I'm on file and I just don't remember now. Maybe you do ... Sorry - not much help.

Also, I edited my PRICING ... as I think I re-configured it and I think it's more right now. NOT AS GOOD AS I THOUGHT ... but, still ok I think.

I can't find anything on the website that says you can't order from small business.

Okie - I didnt want to say anything but for 3100 bucks you could have gotten a much sweeter sager with much more memory and a better graphics card. There have been some fairly large shadows cast over the nvidia series of cards recently. Also you wouldnt have had to pay tax.

Anyway congrats on your purchase and I hope it all works out well for you

Yeah, the way I figured it the first time ... I gave myself an extra discount that I *thought* applied to my M60 ... but that wasn't the case when I looked at it more.

Oh well... I do have my return policy -- so, if not up to par, I can return and get the 5680.

But, I figured the 5680 similarly equipped and there was only a $300 +/- difference and if tax wasn't applied ... we'd be close to the same. (of course, that includes warranties on both too)

Memory: Remember, that 3100 or whatever I figured it to be includes 1 GB RAM ... except I didn't buy that from Dell -- going to get it from Crucial. My "stock" system though just includes 256.

Video Card - anyone see how this NVIDIA Quadro FX Go700 compares with the Radeon 9600 Pro? Are there some benchies that pit these two against each other?

For what I do, this will probably be enough power anyway - but I have another plan ... give this one to my dad and get me the 5680 later too!!

I really pushed myself hard to figure out why I liked the M60 and posted a lot about it so use the search and find a bulk of my older stuff. Regardless, the M60 is awesome and I love it very much (2nd person after jyoung to get it on the boards among active posters). The video card WILL be slower than the ATI card because of many factors, one of which is that this card is targeted towards precision and not necessarily speed. For those of us that like having professional CAD and 3D programs work w/o a hiccup, the Quadro card is the only way. I also refer to have more than 90 minutes of battery time which you get with most sagers. On more than one occassion I have gotten almost 4 hours on a single charge w/ the primary battery only. I am looking at getting the modular battery for even longer run times. Anyway, best of luck to you with the machine.

In respect to ordering an m60 from Small Business... you may be right, I just see no link to actually configuring one from either the Home or Small areas. It seems to only appear in the Medium/Large area....
