Questions before Purchase =P

Thread Starter
Hi folks,

I'm new to the forum but have been reading up on as many posts as possible in anticipation of purchasing a 5660 laptop. I am pretty much 95% of the way there, just waiting to see how the color on my roommate's Sager looks (he ordered it a week ago which pushed me to consider it even more, heh) before putting in the order. However, I had some questions that I was hoping someone could clarify:

1) Is there any big difference between the 15" LCD and the 15" UXGA IF I plan on only using resolutions of under 1240?

2) Is the faster RPM on the hard drive worth the price on the 40G? The upgrade pushes the RPM up from 4200 to 5400.

3) I already have a wireless PCMCIA card and wanted to know if I could just use that instead of purchasing one. (I know this one is pretty much a given, but I wanted to be 100% sure)

4) Exactly how loud is the AC Power Adapter? Heh, I say this because I plan on using it at my university's library and don't want people throwing their textbooks at me.

5) LAST QUESTION I PROMISE! Any recommendations for a carrying case =P

Sorry if any of these were repeats, but you can tell I am going crazy with certain options and whether or not I should push for the extra options. Thanks for all the help!

Can't reply to all since I don't have my lappy yet myself.

But going thru some of them:

I do think the faster HD is worth it. That's what I got and aside from the battery being drained a bit more, I don't see a downside to upgrading to the faster hard drive.

Pretty sure you can use the same PCMCIA card. As long as it is a type I or II, I don't see a problem.

As for the carrying case, I ordered a High Sierra - Pinnacle Pack. Got it from http://www.ebags.com

I hope my new 5660 will fit. If not, I'll letya know.

If you're not going to use the higher resolution of the UXGA, then I would stick with the SXGA+.

I think most would agree the $21 to upgrade from the 40GB 4200 to the 5400 is worth it.

You should be fine with your wireless PCMCIA card you already have.

Welcome! There are tons of carry case options. If you go to PCTorque's site and look at his case options many of them are highly recommended by forum members. Same goes for powernotebooks.com, those are more leather and business looking, and they suit some people's tastes more.

The upgrade on the hard drive is most definitely worth it. The Hard drive is the bottleneck on performance in these systems, so the faster the hard drive, the better the overall performance by a decent margin.

The power adapter I have is far from loud... Others may have different opinions.

You shouldn't have trouble with your wireless card, just have the drivers and install proceedure ready.

If you plan on using lower resolutions, you should consider staying with a lower native resolution system.

Sorry if I answered them out of order or if they've already been answered to your satisfaction :-) Welcome again and best of luck!

Ah yes, the infamous questions.

Okay, so only a few are. Here goes:

1) I would imagine that both resolutions out of the native would be a tiny bit fuzzy, so the upgrade wouldn't really help too much. In fact, it might make it worse if you plan to use the SXGA+ native res.

2) Yes, most definitely worth it. I didn't even realize there were any hard drives under 5400 in the market, but then I found out about laptops. http://sagerforums.com/forums/showth...=&threadid=551 is a thread regaring performance. Seibol says the 5400 has a 12% increase in performance, which I'd say is very significant.

3) I don't see why not.

4) The noise issue has been mildly discussed as well...

5) more threads...

are all useful.

really no noise issue on the power supply

I would really get the faster hard drive. I have a 8886 and the hard drive is the main factor in slowing it down. I was cheap and got the slower drive, now I wish I would have bought the faster one.

For the carrying case I got the "standard business bag" and it was fine for me. Its just a generic bag, but I bring it around with me a lot and its fine. The 5660 prob comes with the same one.
