Questions Regarding My New 9300

Hi Guys,
I'd like to thank any and all of you first off for any help you may be able to give. Here are my questions:

1- I just received my 9300 today and I noticed, much to my dismay, that they did not ship me a Windows OS disk. They gave me a slip of paper telling me that I needed to read the dell help pdf for all OS related questions. I can't stand that resellers such as Dell and Gateway are sending notebooks without OS or driver disks. But my question is can I install my own 7200rpm drive in the Dell and install Windows using my own disk but use the key they provided me? Also, can I do the online chat with Dell and request that they send me an OS disk?

2- Are there downloadable driver files on the Dell website for all components such as wireless card, graphics card, etc.? Or are there any other drivers that you guys prefer for your 9300s' components?

3- Lastly, the LCD shipped with my notebook looks great with the exception of some significant light leakage from the bottom. This is unacceptable in my opinion and as well as my profession. I have read quite a lot of the complaints and remedies written on this site and would like to how you guys would suggest I go about replacing the thing. Do I have to tell them the screen flickers, or that there is too much leakage? What do you suggest?

Thanks for all the help.

Go to Start-Programs-Dell Something-Burn Recovery CD or something like that. You will be able to burn the CD which is actually the Windows XP cd without all the extra Dell junk.

Also, when I reinstalled, I used all of the Dell drivers. I tried the Realtek sound driver another non-Dell driver and both wouldn't install.

Wow, thanx for the quick tip. Would you suggest doing a complete RE-format of the HD and then re-installing with the newly made Windows cd? And then download all the updated drivers from dell's web-site?

1. I bought my 9100 with a 40GB and bought a 60GB 7.2k hard drive off eBay. The day I received the 9100 I pulled out the 40GB, installed the 60GB, and booted with my own Windows XP Pro CD. For the drivers I used the Dell Resource CD. It worked great, had Windows XP Pro running without all the preinstalled Dell crap.

2. Yes all the drivers for your 9300 can be found on the Dell site or the Dell Resource CD.

3. I would mention excessive light leakage and color of the LCD - or something like that. Just don't mention dead pixels because they can get out of that.

Thats what I did, except when I reinstalled XP all the 9300 drivers were included when the cdr was burned. But no Dell junk included, just drivers.

Fantastic!!! Thanks for the info...I will have to do the reformat and install tomorrow morning and I'll let you know how it goes - if you're interested. Also, any comments on the LCD question? I don't want to call and complain about the screen unless I know that something will be done about it. There is too much light leakage and I do a lot of CAD and graphic design - like so many others on the forum - and can't live with it.

Please let me know what you sugggest.

Hi, I just got my 9300 too. I also burned my OS copy out of my 9300, thnx for that tip. Now I have 1 question left: do I need a serial when i reinstall my laptop? Cause they didnt give me any!! I dont want to format, reinstall and then find out I need a fricking serial!

I really want to format and reinstall, cause all those ****ed up programs from Dell are just crap. When I look into my system processing. I see like 50 programs running This isnt great for the power consumption right? So please...could someone help me?

Mine didn't ask for a product key when I installed from the Dell OS CD that I burned, but if it does ask you for one it is on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

Well I must admit I was a little skeptical about the need to reinstall the os and reinstall all those drivers, but I’m now a believer! My 9300 is so much faster and responsive than before. Dell should be ashamed of them self’s to ship a machine with such power with all this Bloatware…

So anyone unsure about the reinstall, do it, it’s well worth it, and it’s very easy…

LOL, with the light leakage, you must have the Samsung display, the one everyone has been drooling about!

Yeah dude same for me! I don't even know what sparkles are, but since I don't see anything strange...I must not have them! No dead pixels too and the fans...well I can't hear them..just like you said. (very cool air comes out of it, even when I am playing games)

Light leakage: well.. I can see a very slight band of extra light coming from the bottom, but I don't think we can call that light leakage. Or is even the slightest light a leakage to you people? I have powerstrip installed, but I can't find wich LCD brand I have. Anybody? (when i check the monitor information... I see at: color display = LPL000 or something, that is LG?)

Yes, I believe that is an LG Screen

BTW, if you have Windows Media Center Edition you have to request a recovery DVD from customer support, they'll ship it in two days for free. Since the OS has all the extras like the setup video it comes on a pressed DVD instead of a CD you can burn.
