This is a REAL hard choice. Personally, it would go down between looks, and the Z71V seems to have it in portability. The 256MB vid card on x700 is also a real killer if you decide on the NP4880.... sorry I can't make the decision for you but I'm sure that people who have one will likely say theirs. Many more Z71V fans in here than 4880, so you will likely hear the crowd go with the Z71V.

Tell us what you'd like more: portability or gaming.

yeah, ^^ what he said
Ivsft, the z71v sounds good and all but I heard there were LCD screen problems. You should research about the z71v a little bit more. And they are right; portability or gaming?

Hmm and if I say gaming, the you say Sager?

I will not carry it much for now at least. I am not in the University.

But I do need it to be quiet, I do a lot of reading -pdf. I need a super eye friendly screen, cause a lot of my learning is from an LCD pixel set

But power is also very importent.
So which one?
They both fit those descriptions. From what I hear, they both are very quiet (smilepak got his to be nearly completely silent by cooling the system to need no fan), and they both offer very nice screens. Some people have problems with the Z71V screen, namely "sparkles." If you aren't up on that, sparkles are little bright portions on the screen that when a solid color is displayed (id est green) it appears to have water droplets everywhere. Some people hardly see it even though it is there, other people demand their money back. If you do get it (small but distinct chance) then it really is up to you if it bugs your or not.

If gaming is a necessity (id est WoW or FarCry every second) then the x700 with 256MB may be useful. Otherwise, the smaller & sleeker Z71V does offer a very nice widescreen, great gaming, very quiet, and overall very attractive. If you wanted my personal opinion, Z71V.

about sager

"the angle viewing is average at best and the user should be aware of this before moving into this model. "

"The viewing angle of the LCD used is a huge let down and something I can see people choosing not to buy because of. The route they took was to give a little to keep the price down, weight down, and battery life up."

So is it good or bad? Comparing to sparkles on z71v?
That is right, the viewing angles of the 4880, I hear, are horrendous. But this shouldn't bother anyone unless you frequently have people over your shoulders or you prefer lying on the edge of your bed with your laptop on the ground. Personally, I'd still go with the Z71V and take my gamble on the sparkles. If they do show up, I don't think I'd be much bothered because I'd be gaming anyways, and the screen constantly changes. If you are a web designer or constant photoshopper then, yes, the sparkles will make life a hell.
well from what i hear, some people dont even notice the sparkles, others can get used to the sparkles and not have it a big deal and some cannot stand it. with a screen like the one on the 4880, it boils down to whether or not you can live w/ those viewing angles.

Aaahhhh

This decision thing is kiling me

So far 51% towards Z71V ... But 256 video card. I say if it was not for 256 video I would go with Z71V.

hmmmm......

Deal!

BTW, I was hanging on the same decision. It mainly depends on what game you are playing though... if it is an absolutely HUGE game that requires alot of objects and pictures to be displayed at once (think MMOs) then the 256 will help out. If it is CS:S Then the best bet might be to go with the Asus... even though there is a drop in performance, the laptop is just better overall. Just don't let WoW or CS:S addiction make you choose your laptop for you. Buy one keeping in mind what you will do with it...

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I don't think that the x700 is powerful enough to take advantage of the 256 megs of ram, but I could be wrong.
Somone posted a link to some benchmarks that showed at 128MB of vram the performace gain basically stops. At 256MB the performance gain is negligible.

what about the cpu? Is 2.0 makes that big of a difference comparing to 1.86.

The price does, but is it worth it?
The difference in performance isnt significant enough to justify the price difference between them. 1.86 is plenty.

Ok, narrowed down the tech specification:

Chembook 2371v - V

$1,710.00

15.4" WSXGA (1680x1050) Wide -Screen Active Matrix Display
1.86 GHz Intel Pentium-M (750) Processor (Sonoma / 2 MB L2 Cache / 533 FSB)
128 MB Dedicated DDR2 - Nvidia 6600 PCI-Express Video Card
1 GB DDR2 (533 MHz) Memory (1 GB x 1)
S-video out, 5 USB (2.0), 1 PCMCIA, IR, IEEE Firewire
2 yr ChemUSA warranty w/ 1-way paid shipping (lifetime tech support)

Sager NP4880 -V1

$1,671.0

(Instant $150 Rebate - Limited Time Promotion - Already applied to price)

15.1" TFT SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) Active Matrix Display
1.86 Intel Pentium M (740) Processor (2 MB Cache, Sonoma)
256 MB GDDR3 ATi MOBILITY™ RADEON® X700 / 16x PCI-Express Graphics
1024MB DDR SDRAM (PC-2700) -2 DIMMS
Integrated Digital Video Camera (640x480 resolution)
Factory 1-yr parts & labor warranty w/ lifetime techincal support

Sager - better video ram 256, Digital Camera (not that I will be using it)
Asus - better CPU - 750, Wide Screen

Still deciding.... I will order one of them tomorrow.. Which one.. quiet a puzzle

P.S. What is DIMMS-1 vs DIMMS-2 for memory DIMMS-2 is 5$ more
post #19 of 39
I say Z71v. It has the little extras like ALS, built-in-microphone, and faster RAM as well. The DIMMS-x referes to the number of RAM sticks installed. With two, you can get dual-current or whatever, that speeds it up by about 5-10%. But with two, it is harder to upgrade in the future. I say Z71, but I am biased

Ok, I have now decided to FIANLLY GET Z71v !!!

But last questions are? From whom to buy? So far discountnotebooks gives the best price out of all that I looked.

But they only have:2 yr ChemUSA warranty w/ 1-way paid shipping (lifetime tech support)

Not 3 is it ok or?? Any suggestions?
