If not Norton or McAfee... what?

Hey all,

I see people talk about steering clear of the big names like McAfee and Norton, however no one seems to like to say what they use for antivirus software. So I am asking: whaddya'll use??

Thanks.

Oh, and is the XP firewall suficient or do you recommend using someone else's?

i'm using norton systemworks...no problems whatsoever, and even though it's said to use a load of resources, i have no problems with it slowing down my computer........

I happily use Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html) Antivirus. Free for home users and has never failed! I put this on friends and family machines that do not have protection. I also run Microsofts Anti Spyware tool (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en) and I applied Spyware Guide's Spyware Block List (located here: http://www.spywareguide.com/blockfile.php) Also free for home users.

With regards to the Firewall which is now part of the OS (as of SP2), I find it quite secure. I tested it via one of the most trusted security experts sites at www.grc.com which is Steve Gibsons site. His Shields Up tests are very good and you will be impressed with what you find there.

I use AVG free edition, http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php

I like it because it seems to have a smaller footprint.

Bit Defender 8.0 -- best I've used, and I've used all the good ones that aren't free. I'm not saying the free software isn't reliable, because it certainly is, and I would use it over Norton or McAfee any day of the week. However, if I were going to throw my money down on software it would be Bit Defender. Integrated Firewall and Spam software that is super easy to use and the software is not intrusive at all. My style.

I was for many years using NORTON

But then i turned to free ANTIVIRUS software becaus esometimes they turn out to be more efficient...

I tried AVG for a while.

And now i'm using AVAST Home Edition, and so far so good, i'd recomend it.

As for the firewall, if you want more control (but sometimes annoying because it asks you if to approve or block almost anything that goies in or out your pc), you should try SYGATE, that's what i'm using right now.

Ciao!

F-prot, uses next to no resources... unlike norton (HOGG) and mcafee, and even avg is a hog compared to f-prot

eTrust EZ Antivirus by Computer Associates. Currently they have a free trial for one year:

I was a long time user of Norton but decided I had enough of that bloated software.

What is it that people hate so much about mcafee?
I like it and hated norton, loved kaspersky, used all the free ones.
Mcafee seems to be all right to me.

McAfee makes it difficult to upgrade modules and ties up your computer resources.

I got a refurbished lappy and it came with McAffee for fifteen months but my other classic lappy 8000 inspiron uses Computer Associates, Inc... and it's worthwhile, as well as the firewall (zonealarm) I've used norton too.. no complaints.

Avast (AV) and Sygate (firewall)

I prefer Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security

I used to use Norton, then McAfee, but as others said they take too many resources... many of my co-workers swear by AVG, but I did some research and really like the reviews that Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security was getting.

Found a sweet deal on eBay, and it's been about 4 weeks now and I'm happy with the small footprint, use or resources, and protection it provides.

You can find out more about it here: http://www.trendmicro.com/en/product...e/overview.htm

There are a few reviews of it online, but this is the one that had me choose it: http://reviews.cnet.com/Trend_Micro_...2.html?tag=tab

The user opinions on there weren't all that stellar, but I have had no problems with the software and like it a lot.

My two cents anyway,

I used to use Nod32 and it's great however it does have problems with the odd program, one of them being Azureus Bittorrent. I'm currently using Kapersky anti-virus. it's low profile and very highly respected. Norton always seems to be a resource monster and McAfee is constantly trying to sell you something.

The really bizarre thing about kaspersky is their firewall program which is the buggiest most impossible to remove program ever written.

Thanks for the tip watchtower I'll steer clear of that.

I think for notebooks especially, low resource use is key and F-prot is another "silent running" program.

Kerio Personal Firewall and Avast! as antivirus. Both free for personal use, constant free updates and far more light than Norton and similars.
