Are you done with finals, Axiom?

oh , as a suggestion it would be better to have your anti-virus and firewall from 2 different vendors.

If you have your firewall and antivirus from the same vendor "if" a vulnerability is exploited then both systems "may" be affected because they come from the same provider and the malicious coders are probably working on them too, since they already know the way inside the same vendor.

Yes. I am now addicted to WoW when I'm not working or drinking.

How's school going for you?

If you know you don't mind the whole MMORPG thing then I'd say it is. Definitely a great timesink if that's what your looking for. I have a bunch of real life friends that play and managed to meet some cool people to hang online with so I'm enjoying it.

I'm using Avast!. It's really unobtrusive and light on the resources. And it works really well. Been running it for months, even bought it for 4 comps at work. It updates itself very nicely especially.

I've also tried AVG and Antivir. Both are ok but have their quirks. I did not like AVG's older free version but haven't tried the newer one. Antivir really slows down defrags and probably disk accesses in general.

Norton and McAfee are both junk IMO. They are so concerned with being in your face that it's just one big bad joke. They are bloated. They have annoying activation schemes. Simple as that.

I'd love to get into WoW. I've just been too busy, then I started a very big programming project: to port Metroid (in the general vein of Super Metroid) to the TI-89 calculator, which sucked up all WoW time. Go to http://metroid.calcgames.org to read about it. I havent had time to work at all in a while, which I feel bad about. Back to WoW, its a great game, probably well worth your time and money. I do not know if it will run well on your 700m, I hope you have a desktop or something.

I'm using McAfee and ZoneAlarm for virus and firewall. McAfee because it's free from my university, and a friend recommended ZoneAlarm. McAfee especially is a resource hog, but my computer is easily able to handle it.

Hey, itn't M$ going to offer av software? Or it is just to businesses?

Emory, where I'm going to college, offers a free "Symantec Anti-Virus." I know that Symantec IS Norton, but these are 2 completely different programs. There isn't even a systray icon, and it barely takes any of my resources.
Hmm. Go figure. Of course, the interface looks like it was designed for windows 3.11, so ...

Avast and Zonealarm, might give sygate another try...
So if Iunistall the Norton I would be okay going with my old standard of AVG and Zone Alarm? Or have some of these new programs gotten better than AVG?

Norton has always given me problems. McAfee works very well. But I'm trying out Trend Micro's PC-cillin 2005, and it works very well with very little resources. It's top rated on CNET reviews.

I like Avast, too, but I shut up the guy. He talks too much for my taste.

After extensively researching and trying every firewall I could get my hands on I ended up settling on Agnitum Outpost Firewall. It takes a little setting up but offers complete control over what enters and exits your system.

I am not sure why there is such a push for having a software firewall. As long as you access the internet from behind a router that has a SPI firewall (most do) - it seems like having a software firewall would be somewhat redundant. I understand that this configuration will not prevent malicious software from sending outbound requests from your PC but your antivirus, antispyware, and common sense should provide adequate protection IMHO from such a threat. Employing a hardware router as a firewall is more efficient since it only uses the CPU in your router - freeing up the CPU cycles on all the PC's in your network that would would otherwise be assocaited with a software firewall on each PC. I am not saying that a software firewall takes much CPU - but why add more overhead than necessary.

I agree that a router does offer a measure of protection but as far as relying on common sense and antivirus programs to control what exits your machine I do not think that is at all realistic. A software firewall allows you to control outbound update requests from programs, yada yada. It is not just "malicious" programs that many people would like control over. Computers are fast enough now that the impact a firewall has on system performance is extremely negligable. I guess it comes down to the amount of control over your system you would like. Just my opinion.
