Hi, i am new to the forums and i wanted to ask if a:

Acer Ferrari 3400 1gb ram ati radeon 9700 80gb hdd is worth the price of
59000NTD (1903 US)

thx in advance

For the same price you could get the Travelmate 8103. Better specs for most of the components, especially the GPU.

Ok I just have to chime in here

The travelmate 8103 is a 32 bit 1.8Ghz Pentium M Processor....not a 64 Bit 2.0Ghz AMD processors....not sure how that figures into better specs

Then you mention that the GPU is better, actually the X700 is just a PCI-E version of the 9700 that the Ferrari comes with.

Try to compare apples to apples next time you make a comparison.

I currently have an IBM Thinkpad T42p and im looking to sell it and get a ferrari myself.

I think performance wise it looks like a great machine and also is 64 bit so it has more of a future than a 32 bit pentium M does. Enen though the Pentium M is a great proc.

Um, no. The 9700 is equivalent to the Mobility X600. I previously had Dell i9200 with the 9700 and got ~2500 in 3Dmark03. The 8104 that I have now with the X700 gets ~5700 in 3dMark03. Apples to apples I guess For most of the games out there, performance wise, the 8103 should wipe the floor with the Ferrari simply based on its GPU. Most of the newest games are GPU limited.

CPU choice is user dependent. Battery life goes to the P-M; raw power, probably to the AMD. It all depends on what you'll be doing with the laptop. The P-M is a good all-round choice. Good battery life and good performance.

If you're going to run WinXP 64-bit, which is its ticket to longevity , then go and get the Ferrari. You'l be able to brag to your friends that you can run Windows XP64 and still get under a 3000 3Dmark03 score DUE TO THE SLOWER GPU.

RAM-wise, 1GB on the Ferrari is obviously better than the 512MB on the 8103. I would definitely figure in the cost of upgrading to 1GB if you purchase the 8103.

If you don't care about gaming, 3Dmark scores, or anything else just ignore what I sad and get whichever one you want.

If he didn't care about gaming he wouldn't be interested in the Ferrari 3400, so I think it's safe to assume that's a priority. In that case, definitely go with the 8103, the x700 BLOWS away the 9700. I don't know what that dcranford guy is talking about.

either way games or just normal use the 8103 would be the better one to go for... its got the battery life, its got a great gpu, and performs well, so ok its got a 32bit processor but to be honest 64bit has to mature first at this moment in time and performise wise right now doesnt seem majorly great but we will see in the next couple months as the 64bit era is starting to roll ...

.. so i agree with alexrud get the 8103 over the 3400

i own a ferrari 3200 by the way ... performs great in games and normal use... but yea thought id say i own a ferrari before someone says im just being an unfair person deterring you from getting a laptop which would be better for your cash...

My guess is that Acer will eventually announce a new Ferrari with a lowpower AMD64, either an x700 or go6600 processor, and a 16x10 screen. That would be a sweet rig.
Yeah, I am hoping for a new ferrari with either a low power 3700+ or a turion MT-3500

The X700 seems likely looking at past acer notebooks (ati based)

Would be terrible is they used the Xpress 200M though

thx about al ur answers i m gona b usin it for gaming/surfing/skooling. the new turion based ferrari is projected to launch at end of next month in taiwan for 62000 NTD (~2066 US) and a sweet deal of upgrading it to 2 gbs of ram wif an extra 1999 NTD(~60 US).
Polar : where did you find out that info about the ferrari with the turion?

Did any give any specs about what type of turion? an MT or an ML ?

also pc3200 or pc2700?

its a mt pc3200 1..i asked an acer seller in taiwan he said estimated end of nex month..not too sure tho
post #12 of 14
Awesome to hear that it will be pc3200 RAM

I just wonder what MT proc they are going to use....

The highest MT Turion is only clocked at 1.8ghz, I wonder if Acer would actually go down in actual clockspeed on a ferrari? The current Ferrari is clocked at 2ghz.

I did see that there is the ML-37 which is 2ghz and the ML-40 which is 2.2ghz However those are 35W TDP

The MT procs are 25W TDP but the highest clock speed is 1.8ghz.

Let me know if you get any more info on the type of turion and speed.

Also if they are available in taiwan next month, does that mean they will be available in the US at that time as well?

i m not sure about the clock speed yet i ll ask tomoro.

i think it ll mite tak maybe 1-2 months to get to US since Acer is based in Taiwan.

well the wait will be worth it if the Ferrari 4000 is at least 2ghz , has pc3200 memory, and wxga and a X700 GPU.

Plus I bet we would order it from taiwan somehow if someone couldnt wait
