UXGA Upgrade on 8890

post #1 of 13

Is it worth upgrading from the 16" SXGA+ to the UXGA? I will be using my computer mainly for internet, movies and gaming. Is the difference bewteen the two really worth the extra 105 dollars? Just looking for some opinions thanks

I can say myself having seen a sxga and owning a uxga, uxga hands down.

That's not necessarily true, it all depends on which screens the different machines are using.

I had a Sager 8887v with a UXGA screen & now I have an 8890 with an SXGA screen. I LOVE the SXGA of the 8890 & would buy it again in a heartbeat.

My son is an avid gamer & he also prefers the 8890 screen.

IMHO, it depends how your eyes are with small text. If you can read text at UXGA comfortably, UXGA is the way to go for the extra desktop room while internet browsing or working. The UXGA has almost half-again as much desktop space (in pixels) as the SXGA.

I agree that UXGA displays more pixels on the desktop, but in actual use it does not give you anywhere near "half again as much"

Here is a picture of a 15" UXGA Dell next to a SXGA Sager 8890 to give some idea of what we're talking about here:

UXGA = 1600x1200 = 1.92 Megapixels
SXGA = 1280x1024 = 1.31 Megapixels
1.92/1.31 = 1.46
46% more is "almost half-again as much", as I said.

Where do you see a war?? There is no reason people can't discuss the merits of each.

The OP said SXGA+ though:
1400x1050 = 1.47 Megapixels
1.92/ 1.47 = 1.32

Before the 8890 and the 5680 shipped there were hundreds of really annoying threads of people flaming each other because of personal preferences.

True. But from what I can see, the options on the 8890 are SXGA and UXGA, I was comparing the screens that are actually available.

I agree, but this thread was not one of them & I was not arguing. I think both screens have definite advantages & I have owned both.

I didn't mean to start a "war" of any sort, it's just I don't know that much about the two screens and I saw it as a new upgrade option so wanted to know if it was really worth the upgrade for what im using it for. I did mean the regular sxga not the sxga+ sorry bout that. I don't like the smaller font size because my eyes are not all that great so I will probably go for the regular screen.
