FutureMark Test on XPS2 vs Alienware

Thread Starter
Does anyone try to compare the XPS2 to the Alienware 7700 in their web site using the FutureMark? I tried it but the alienware site says that it cannot compare it, or they don't want us to see the result?
They probably don't want to see the results.

Look up the Sager 9860 its almost exact same specs as alienware 7700.

This should get you started.

My XPS2 gets 5056 in 3Dmark05 stock(see my sig )

BTW: How is this possible?
nVidia signed an exclusive with Dell for the go6800 ULTRA.
I dont know for how long the exclusive was for, but for now no other laptop company can use an nVidia 6800 ULTRA so XPS2 is king of the notebooks (for the next few minutes atleast)

Daddy of 2. You said you got 5056 in 3DMark05 stock! Did you do any reformatting or anything? Any tweaking of any kind? What did you do if anything. Mine should be here tomorrow and I don't really want to go through the whole re-format, just remove the stuff I don't want. I am a part time gamer, don't care if I get 30fps vs. 32 like the obsessive people. Let me know, I am curious.

It started out as 4868, but then i installed all the windows and McAfee patches. Then used msconfig to remove several services and startup items that i did not want running and thats about it.
I did a full reinstall and did not see any improvement. I actually got better scores before full (5084) install becase i think I tweeked more at that time with the Dell tech when we were trouble shooting some other problems.
Or maybe now i have more things running such as yahoo messenger.

XPS 2 versus Alienware. That makes me laugh... I'm still wondering if those guys with the 9860/7700m will ever have the opportunity to spend more money on a 6800 Ultra Go.

I heard that the 9860 can't handle any more heat (it makes sense since the 9860 is an excellent stove/lap-top already).

Looks like Sager will be happy to upgrade a 7700 with the Ultra card for the low low price of $895....and without mentioning names, there's this one fool over on the AW boards who can't seem to wait to dump the $895 on an Ultra card for his 7700. He goes on to say "The XPS 2 just got a lot smaller, and we AW owners don't care what we have to spend to reclaim the crown (At least for awhile ;-). A ULTRA equipped AW/Sager is gonna kill the XPS 2 as long as its the same card and not underclocked. "

Now why would anyone with an IQ past double digits say something like that when a non-ultra equipped 7700 doesn't even kill a 9300? Maybe his expectations aren't that high...after all, when you read his review of his new 7700, one of his comments was "The Alien head on the clam shell was bigger then I expected and the glowing eyes must be seen IN PERSON to be believed."

Holy sh*t!?!? $895? No way!

I will acknowledge the fact that as long as the ultra in the 7700 and XPS 2 is the same, the 7700 should win in all of the benchmarks if it has a 3.8ghz Pentium 4. Of course, to me it's totally NOT worth the extra money, weight, size, heat, and lack of battery life just to run games a little faster. We'll see just how much faster it is than the XPS 2 soon enough.

No way I would pay 895 to upgrade it. Can you imagine the heat with a ultra and P4 3.8? Ouch, I would like my eggs over easy. lol.

Pretty soon they won't have to put in LEDs to light up the alien eyes. The power brick will glow plenty bright enough to illuminate the room.
The upgrade involves swapping the motherboard and replacing the 160watt powersupply with a 220watt version. That is going to be hot!

It may win the benchmarks, but it won't by alot and certainly not enough to make a statement like "the 7700 will kill the XPS 2".

So let's see.........

Average price of an XPS2 ~ 2500 with rebates and a decent config.

Average price of a 7700 ~ 3100 (just configured it).
+ 895
= $4,000!

NICE!

mmmmmmmmmmm.......!!! Imagine playing Counter Strike Source and cooking a steak on your 7700
Medium Well please! With some mashed potatoes A1 Bold and Spicy Steak Sauce with a good 'ole beer

It's funny, I mentioned the fact that you couldn't compare better comptuers on alienware's website like a month ago in a debate between dell and alienware, nice to see they haven't fixed it. (I got a TON of negative rep for that post from the alienware guys, guess it struck a nerve )

If I owned an Alienware I would really way the cost benefits. First is the actual performance gain. Furthermore; do you think Alienware is going to honor your extended warranty after another notebook company has modded your laptop? Probably Not! So now if you go the Sager route, you lose $200-$300 for your extended warranty and you have to shell out another $800 for the upgrade. That's reaching Voodoo PC territory.

I'm afraid they wouldn't have time to cook their steak with a battery life of 10 minutes.

Yeah, that's an exaggeration. But then again, everything about Alienware is based on exaggeration. The quality, the price, the service...need I go on? Too many horror stories from a company that supposedly has higher standards.
