5680 Review

Thread Starter
I've read everyone's review who bought the 5680 and they are all great and in great detail. So instead of boring everyone with the details here’s my version without all the fluff.

Here's what I got:

Sager 5680-S

-Display: UXGA Wide Angle View 15" LCD
-Processor: 3.0GHZ P4 800 FSB w/ Hyperthreading
-Video: Radeon 9600 PRO 128MB DDR (M10-P)
-RAM: 1024MB 400DDR Dual Channel (2-512MB)
-Hard Drive #1: 60GB 7200RPM
-Hard Drive #2: 80GB 4200RPM
-Media Drive: 8X DVD/24X10X24 CDRW Combo Drive
-XP Pro Operating System
-Keyboard Layout: USA
-2 Batteries
-Wireless Network: Integrated Wireless

Here's what I think:

Screen is nice with no noticeable dead pixels. Maybe I’m lucky who know? DVDs look very good.

WiFi is great! Hooked up a network between my other laptop (Win2K) and this one with XP Pro. DSL & Network was up and running in less than 10 minutes. I have no problems with range either. Connection is good from my bedroom, basement, and back porch. It would probably work in my car too but I haven't tried it yet.

DVD/RW works great but the speed could be a little better. I've had no problems with coasters.

In my opinion, 2 Batteries are a must. I haven't really tested it yet but it looks like I'm only getting a little more than an hour and that's just surfing the web. I'll let you guys know once I test this out.

The speed seems to be okay but I guess I expected more. I'm not much of a gamer but I do lots of Video editing and that puts a machine under as much stress if not more than games ever will. With that said, I haven't had any problems with my video editing but it sure slows this system down to a craw. Even though I haven't had any problems with this it's probably best to buy a tower for this process. But ever since I bought my first laptop I was hooked and you'll never see me behind a desk using a tower, other than at work that is.

Lastly, the keyboard seems to have a little flex in the middle. Maybe it does and maybe it doesn't and I'm just use to my other laptop who knows.

Well there you have it. No sugar coating and with out all the fluff. I've only had this machine for a few days and it seems to be a very solid laptop but that's what you would expect and would accept nothing less.

I've noticed many individuals on this forum having problems with their new purchases and they all seem to be content with them. Why on earth would you pay a premium price for something and not demand a flawless product? If I wanted a sub-standard product I would have bought a Hewlett-Packard.

thats what i don't understand. the people here put up with so much. and do it with a smile on their face. it seems like you have to be "lucky" to get a sager notebook with no dead pixels. maybe money just grows on trees for these people. if i do end up going with sager and i get a dead or colored pixel this will be totally unacceptable and i'll just send it back and probably go with AW. they seem to have a zero dead pixel policy and manage to turn profits.

800-1200$ more for a aw...suprising they can turn a profit with that
also, AW do have dead pixels. sorry to say it..and no matter how you feel about it, it happens.

Phil: a few things about your post are strange.. with dual batteries you should be getting around 2hours of use just by browsing the internet. for video editing 2 things, 1 make sure your not processing samples from the 80gig 4200 drive. hd speed is a big factor in video editing. my p3 800 can almost do real time editing...soo...the sager shouldnt have any problem. ::shrug::

also i cant believe you would, but just in case, dont do video editing while on battery power. the bios cuts the processor speed to 50% when on battery power unless otherwise configured.

I could not see why video editting would be any faster on a similar spec tower than the laptop. Since this is a desktop processor. The problem is probably the IO (which is almost always the bottleneck) If you knew you were going to be doing video editting I would have suggested going for the 7200RPM disk not the 80GB.

Ya... my dual battery setup gets over 2 hours in straight gaming. Maybe you haven't cycled your batts?

i know they have dead pixels, but their policy, as i understand it, is to replace the panel if there is only one dead, lit, or unlit pixel.

As others have stated, dual batteries should get around 2 hours for fairly taxing use. On my recent plane trips, I watched each DVD of LoTR special edition (Fellowship) on a full charge, and finished with around 20% battery life. Web surfing, I would think, should approach 2.5-3 hours. I haven't tested that, though.

About dead pixels - I know it's a matter of personal preference, but I don't mind mine nearly as much as I thought I would. I have one hot (usually green) pixel in the upper left corner. On a UXGA screen like this, I have to look HARD to find it, and I never even notice it unless I'm specifically trying to find it. Yes, other locations would have been worse (I know some are less fortunate), but unless you're always looking at all white/black backgrounds it's not a big deal in practice.

I'm still only getting 1 hour of battery time. I noticed that it only shows that one battery is located. I ordered two, how to I check this?
the 2nd battery is located in one of the media bays.

If that's true then they shorted me a battery! I have my second HD and my DVD/RW in those bays.

it could be packages seperately because those bays r hot swappable.
