I saw a Sentia in a Hummer Today?

Thread Starter
I just wanted to pass this along. I was in Redding today (California) having a tooth pulled. (Yuck) anyhow, When I walked out to my truck there was a U.S. Army Marked Hummer in the parking spot next to me. Being the nosey hummer lover that I am I peeked inside and low and behold their was an alienware laptop mounted in a very nice holder above the transmission hump between the seats. I have heard that the Army has bought some 7700 computers for their use, However this was obviously a new sentia, it was not a huge computer like the 7700. The Computer was one of the Xeno Gray sentia models, Installed in some sort of mechanical mounts. Definately not a homerigged setup, I waited around for about 30 minutes hoping someone would come out so I could inquire about the computer but no luck. Besides, I was already drooling profusely from having my teeth pulled. Heck if someone from the military saw me standing there drooling and bleeding all over the place they may have taken things all wrong anyway.
I am sure someone around here is in the Army or reserves and could comment on weather the Military is using the Sentia Also.

Technically, it was a HMMWV

I remember somewhere I read somewhere that someone was selling the Air Force Alienwares and found it ironic that the computers they were buying had a alien on it.

Yes, Alienware does have government contracts. (FYI, one of their job openings at the moment is for a government liason. Not the exact title, but that's what the job is.)

And AW is actually somewhat popular among us blokes in the Army. You'd be surprized.

Does anyone have information on the in-car mount.
Would love to have a way to mount the Sentia in my car so I could use it as a 12" GPS navigation unit.

For anyone that watches 24 on Fox, I've seen the terrorists using AlienWare laptops several times throughout the season. I guess terrorists like AW. Oh, I've also seen AlienWare laptops in Smallville on the WB, and on Alias which is on ABC.

Yeah Luther or whatever hsi name is has a AW lappie on Smallville. No matter what they always catch attention.

And I also would love to get some info on a car mount. I would be looking for a mount for use in a 2001ish crown vic P-71.

Has anyone tried the USB based GPS receivers with their machines. I am interested but want to research a little first.

I bought the microsoft streets and trips software with the included usb gps (which is really cool looking clear plastic with blue led). The GPS works very well, couldn't be happier with it.

yeah for pc, streets is very good, it just sux for ppc navugation, which is what i use. the pocket version of streets is a joke in terms of routing, cause it doesn't do any.

7700's in use with the DOD...

I am a veteran of the Air Force and a current DOD contractor at Travis AFB in CA. I have seen a few 7700's mounted in military vehicles, mainly HMMWV's, and the rack mounting is usually done through a contracted company. (I am only speaking for the AF, mind you.) They are really cool looking systems. It's a shame that most of the systems I get to work with are Dell's as desktops, and this horrific Gateway (see my pictures post!) that I had to sign out for my temporary assignment. This Gateway is the reason that I am looking to buy a Sentia, as I have to make 6 trips a year and while enrolled in an online bachelor's degree program. The Gateway weighs 8 lbs, has a 1 Ghz P3 processor w/ a 20GB hard drive, no wireless card (had to purchase my own as the base LAN will not allow me to access my school's web site) I need a 'portable' system that defines my personality, and hence the AW Sentia keeps coming to mind.
