Really did not want to buy from Gateway in the first place, but the M680XL is still the only 17" notebook that has everything I need - long battery life, lightweight, number pad, and awesome screen. Will post the results when I hear back.

hey czm, great review! I read it and then came over to this forum and just started going through all of the posts. I just graduated from college and am on my way to grad school in the fall. Where I went to college, they gave us a laptop to use for the 4 years there. My class got a Dell Latitude C540. Well I had to give that back when I graduated in May and have been looking around for the past several days now for a laptop that will last a good 4-5 years and be able to handle any Physics-related work I will be doing while pursuing a PhD. From what I've read in your review and here on the posts, the M680XL looks to be the best bet and I can't wait to get it! I've looked at the other 17" laptop options but nothing looks better than the M680XL. Thanks for the review! It's been a great help in my decision to go with it.

You can email zennie at zennie.mcdonald@gateway.com I'm sure he'll be able to give you at least 10-15% off.
hey Yoda, that's great man! I've been on the Gateway website trying out different configurations to see how low I can get the price without sacrificing too much. How did you get Zennie to give you such a great discount? Did you just tell him that you couldn't go over a certain price and he was nice enough to help you out? I'd love to save as much as I can. Any advice you can give me would be great! If anyone else has any advice, it'd be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

Spooky, I e-mailed him telling him that I was on a limited budget, and that I could not spend more than $2500. I also gave him the specs I wanted along with my phone number and e-mail address. He e-mailed me saying that he talked to his boss who approved the deal. I called him to confirm the specs, and I bought the computer.

czm2000, thank you very much for the review. I loved all of your pictures. You said that the docking station required a lot of force to attach the computer. Does the laptop actually lock into the dock? I'm afraid to push down really hard on my computer, and it hasn't locked in, the ports work though. If I pick up the computer, the dock falls off. The latches made me think that it should attach to the computer.

I'm glad you enjoyed the review. I actually got the port replicator figured out a couple days after I wrote that review. It doesn't take as much pressure as I was applying but it does take a fair amount. I was actually trying to push down and dock it on the keyboard pull out tray which is under the desk (this is where I would typically use my laptop since I like the height). You need to have both the dock and laptop on a solid surface when you push down. Push near the hinges (or on them) and you won't have to worry about pushing to hard and damaging the laptop. It is suppose to lock. Mine kept falling off too and the ports would work with it not actually locked on. But it is suppose to lock on. When it's latched right, you can actually pick the laptop up and the dock stays attached (I wouldn't do that regularly as you don't want to put a lot of stress on the port) and you'll know it right away if it's latched right. It actually gets better and easier with several times of docking it correctly and undocking it. It's like averything settles in. Don't be afraid to push on the hinges until it clicks into place (asuming you have it lined up right). You'll be happy you did. I was afraid to at first, but I am glad I used a little more pressure. Close the lid on the M680 and just make sure you set the front of the laptop down on the desk and then lower the back down lining up the little line on the back left hinge and on the dock. Then push down (you might need to uses your palms on the hinge part of the laptop) until it clicks. Make sure you don't put force down on the middle of the screen or in the center of the screen between the hinges. I love me dock though. It works awesome, and of course it takes the hassle out of the cords. Good luck.

Linari,

Does the rest get warm or just really hot? I am trying to figure out which hard drive to go for, the 5400 rpm or the 7200 rpm. Would you recommend the 7200
rpm? Are you happy with the 7200 rpm or would you have rather gone with the cooler 5400 rpm? Is the heat a big bother or no? Let me know when you get a chance. If anyone else has any opinions on the 5400 rpm vs. 7200 rpm, i'd love to hear them. Thanks!

I am happy witht he 5400 RPM drive. The 7200 is definitely faster but not by leaps and bounds. For example to transfer a 100MB file you'd be looking at 2 seconds difference or so. Faster but not monumental. I don't have any issues with hard drive heat either. Unless you're trying to win a race, you'll be fine with a 5400 RPM drive.
spooky, i dont really think it was the hardrive causing the problem as czm2000 pointed out it was on the right side, and that side is cool all the time. Go ahead and get the 7200 it wont matter heat-wise. The left side is where the cpu/heatsink is.

2 Day Old M680XL Died

The saga continues ... Tech support had the unit sent to the wrong destination - Irving Texas instead of the Tennessee facility for repairs! It is still under 15 day warranty and I may just return the unit. Have already asked for a new replacement as I did not spend this kind of dough for a refurbed unit. Sounds like there are some serious quality control issues with the M680s. Will keep you posted.

Hello, loved your review czm2000! I am definately sold.

But I have a question. BestBuy has a Gateway model 8510GZ with specs similiar to the M680x. I'm tempted to buy it, but this will be my first laptop purchase in about 5 years so I want to make a good decision. Would anyone care to point out any important differences that I should be aware of? The Best Buy computer is here:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1117177722001

There is only 512MB memory and 64MB Video memory (don't know if BestBuy will upgrade it for me, but could I do it myself?). Also the screen is WXGA instead of WSXGA. Any opinions on this?

Of course the nice thing about it is I can drive to Best Buy tomorrow and pick it up! I just want to make sure I'm getting the same wonderful machine that czm2000 recommended so highly.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you liked my review.

That's an M680 alright. Wow. Looks like their actually selling them now. They weren't before. You could roll with this and be just fine. The nice thing is if you don't like it or if there is something wrong, you can bring it right back.

You could definitely upgrade the RAM yourself. It's cheap and easy to do. You would not be able to upgrade the video. At least not right now, it's not available. The only things that would deter me are the 64 MB graphics card instead of the 128 MB. The WXGA as upposed to the WSXGA, it has the ultrabright technology so the screen should look great, but for me I like the WSXGA since it gives you some more workable space on your desktop and gives images a tighter resolution. Also, I don't see where it says what the number of cells the battery is. I would hope it's the 8 cell and not the 12 cell. I don't like the way the 12 cell protrudes out past the edge of the notebook. Nothing wrong with it, it's just not appealing to me. The price is about right too. If you're fine with those things, I'd say go for it. Good luck and let me know what you think of it if you get it.

My advice to you is be patient and persevere. I ordered a M680X, 2 ghz machine with 1 gig of Ram and 100 gig HD, 4 year service K for $2369. Had a problem with the wireless that (after many hours with dozens of “expert” techs at Gateway they couldn’t resolve....(They even sent me a new wireless component...only to find out that it was for a different machine and my wireless needed to be sent in to repair.) I also had a conflict with a device driver that prevented the machine from hibernating. Tech finally authorized a replacement computer and shipped it to me...but before I got it I found out it did not have the specifications of the machine it was replacing and they had it recalled. Finally, I went back to my original salesman. He looked over all that I had been through and said he would send me a machine that was the same or better than I had (at no additional cost). Since the M690X no longer came with a 2.0 ghz processor, he upgraded me to a M680 XL with a 2.13ghz. He billed me only $1963 for this machine and told me that when I get it to return the other one for a full refund. (I got a better machine at about $400 less!!!!) I am grateful - but I think it was reasonable compensation for all of the aggravation. However, I have the new computer and it is marvelous! Wireless works like a charm...the monitor is outstanding, it is quiet and though the temp is 60 c at 800mhz it is not uncomfortably warm. The battery life is outstanding (I have both the 8 cell and 12 cell and haven’t ever needed the 12.) AND did I tell you it is LIGHT!

All and all, it was worth it. So hang in there!!!!

Sounds like it worked out great for you. I just hope mine works flawlessly again when it comes back.

Gateway has extended the return warranty period from 15 to 30 days, which takes it to the end of July. So when it comes back, I will do a non-stop burn-in. Any problems and it will go back and I order a replacement.

Turned out to be a bad motherboard, replaced, all seems to work well now. No loss of data either. I have another 15 days under return warranty (extended by Gateway), just in case. Repair center turned it around in 24 hours and then sent it back via next day delivery. Not bad considering that I just have the standard one year warranty.

And I still can't get over how totally awesome this screen is!

I am interested in a 3dmark05 score on the 8510gz from BB. If anyone has this rig please post your benchmark score.

the M680XL now comes standard with an nvidia 6800 265mb graphics card and 2.13 ghz processor. Now it's even more amazing.

One HUGE step closer to perfect. I would have even been happier with a shorter battery life and more heat for the 256MB in this puppy. Great update. Thanks for the info.

Ugh! I just ordered the 680XL three days ago - with the 128mb card! Customer service says there's nothing I can do to change my order now. Bah!

This is what you should do.

When FedEx come to your home with that computer, refuse to sign for it. It will go back to Gateway and they will refund the FULL amount.

If you still have some cash available, you can go ahead and order the new 680XL with the nvidia 6800 because I heard that it would take about a month to get that new computer.

Trust me, I did it with my 680XL. I just did not sign for it (even the Gateway sale rep told me that) and I got my refund back. It did take some time to get my refund...but eventually I got it.

What you will get is a delay of your computer. But the good thing about it is that you will get the latest 680XL. I would do this if I were you.
