That's a nice looking computer.

I like the fact that it has a full-size keyboard.

That does seem to be a bit long. I would have to speculate that maybe it's the video card if you went with the 6800. Mine was in processing for about a day (X700). You may want to give them a shout if you haven't already to make sure there isn't anything else they need from you that might be holding your order up. I'd like to think they would have called you if that was the case, but you never know.

Good Luck.

Re Humming: Open the Volume Control and select "Mute" option for "PC Speakers". Humming gone!

response time

A question about M 680 XL. Does someone know what the response time of the screen is? Thanks.

How is your M680?

Just wondering, with some people getting rid of their M680 (http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=102458) or advising against buying it (http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=102521) how is yours doing?

Still happy with it or thinking about getting something else?

And if you could do this all over again, would you buy it or get a different laptop?

trust me do not get thius notebook. I am trying to save people money this notebook just sucks and is ugly. thats it they keyboard is not centered. NO one prab uses the numeric keypad, the mouse sucks, the case flexes and made out of pure plastic. The lcd hinges suck as they broke 5 times and were replaced under gateways horrid support. The fans just drive everyone nutz. I just had to sell this shit to my frined who now hates it. Well i told him As-is Alos this otebook gets hot, honestly for this many proablems I would proababley be happoer with the top of the line sager 3860 and would have far less complaints. I dont think a single person is happy with this notebook.

The gateway missing tv tuner, dvr, security features for business; cutomers (only 2 so far) rated higher. I will be using the system daily at home. I use it for a lot of business/office apps and need built in 10key pad, occassional design work, digital pics music, email, online games, but no heavy gaming. I always leave my solo on, unless I'll be gone from the house a couple of days or it's storming. It's been faithful, except for cracked hinges (why I don't move it around too much). However I'm running Windows 98 and need to upgrade for new software, mp3player,and want to go wireless. Thanks for any suggestions.
hate to bust your bubble i dont think there is a single person that call the m680 quiet

Are you for real? Some friend you are to sell a notebook with problems and laugh it off. It's worth noting that you haven't liked it from day one. Nothing is problem free and some have noted their problems, but you are spreading crap again if you're saying that not a single person likes it.

For what it's worth, I am enjoying it as much as I did on day one. I use the keypad all the time for my reporting/spread sheet needs and will probably keep it when I go to buy my next laptop. I usually sell my current notebook when I'm buying new, but I have been so happy with the M680 I think I'm actually going to be able to hold out until the Dual Core notebooks are released next year and will then probably keep the M680 in the family.

Read and beleive everything anyone has posted good or bad about the M680 except if it's laptop<3. If you are familiar with his posts you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. His story changes with what ever way the fan blows that day. There are people who have had valid concerns and problems with the M680 and I beleive them and it's unfortunate. They are consistant in their posts about their problems. Read those and take them into consideration before buying. Just don't listen to what someone who would screw over a friend has to say. Not trustworthy information. Laptop<3, I thought you were going to start making reasonable contributions to NBF

Considering your use of improper spelling and incorrect use of the word less, I would not trust a single thing that you say. I also would not trust someone who pawns off “sub-par goods” to his friend. I have nothing but great things to say about this computer, and I encourage people to disregard comments made by Laptop<3. Having used the M680XL for over a month, I can attest its quality and performance.

ooh yea i really like the loud fans and the crappy hinges the gateway had. Everyon has different expectations for a notebook and the gteway's qualty is below avg. HOnestly its a pile of crap! Compared to a powerbook g4 or asus notebooks its a joke. Honestly i dont see how you like it, but then again as i said we all like different things.

Ummmm. Ok. I think. Actually, I don't know what to think.

You didn't even really make a point except people like different things. Is that like saying the sky is blue? And if so, is that really a point?

You can't imply that I like cracked hinges or loud fans. I have presented tons of fact based info that would be quite contrary. You have done nothing but ramble. I'm sorry I have not had the problems you have. You seem to have had more problems than most. Then again, I don't recall most people experimenting with their laptop and taking it apart and disconnecting wires and who knows what else you did. Sounds to me like the only thing Gateway did wrong in your case is not sealing the case shut permanently. Your biggest problem was a philips head screw driver and your own mind.

In laptop<3's defense, I don't think he always say bad thing about the m680. Imagine what kind of praise he said about it in order to be able to sell his good friend his m680.

Can I get a reponse of what type of screen you guys went with for the M680? I dont know if I should get the ultrabright or the standard screen type for the M680XL. If the ultrabright is glossy is it not worth getting b/c I am going to college next week and I am going to use this computer as my only computer. I will be doing school work and definitely unreal hours in front of the screen. I am a afraid to get the ultrabright if its going to bother my eyes b/c of the long use. What do you guys suggest. Also I am still trying to decide if I am should go with the 60 GB 5400rpm or the 7200rpm. I do a lot of multitasking. So speed is a huge must for me. If there is not much of a diff. between the two rpm speeds I would like to get feed back by you guys on what rpm speed HD you guys have and if there is a hot left palm rest or not. I just want to make a observe to see which users have the 7200 drive and have problems with heat and fan noise and which users have the 5400 drive and have problems with heat and fan noise. Please if you guys can post something for me as soon as possible that would be awesome. I need to place my order Monday b/c that is the last day can return the M460 XL Fully Loaded for the M680XL Fully Loaded. Thanks in advance. This thread is really helpful. Double Kudos to czm2000!!

Hi there. Glad you find this post useful. I wouldn't want to say which screen you should get as it comes down to personal preference. I have the WSXGA w/ Ultrabright and love it. That's generally what people are making reference to when they rave about how awesome the screen is. I sometimes look at my screen for 16 hours (on a long day). I have no problems at all. It's so clear you there's really no need for strain.

The 7200 rpm drive is faster than the 5400 rpm drive and it is noticable. But in real life terms we're talking an average of about a second or so for a medium task. I have the 5400 rpm though and I have no complaints.

I don't know what type of DVD burner the M460XL has for sure but I presume it's the same as the M680. I have had no problems at all with mine. I've burned plenty of DVD's, CD's, and have even watched a few DVD's. Works great.

Good luck.

Thanks for the quick reponse. You helped me out with choosing the screen format to go with. Since you look at your screen for 16+ hours per day, that sounds like my situation. I am NOW definitely going with the ultrabright. I still need to find out how heat and fan noise affects this system. Since I am getting the M680XL with the 256 MB Graphics gard I know the lappy will get a little hotter and more fan noise. Me personally, I can take fan noise because I got so you to the eight fans in the desktop I built and the ac unit above my head. I want the extra push that the 7200rpm gives but unforunately with great things like faster HDs come sacrifice somewhere else. The somewhere else would be heat. If you guys can help me find out how much heat the 7200rps gives off compared to the 5400rpm hd that would be great. Is the 7200rpm hd produce a significant amount of heat that the laptop is always hot or is it when it is used at the max? How is the 5400rpm Hd in the same scenario? The reason why this little bit is bugging me is that I need to use this laptop for school and at home. Basically it is going to be used very long everyday. Sorry for the million and one questions, its just like to get something that fits my lifestyle that I would not end up selling to my some else like laptop<3 did to his friend (you're a great friend huh?). I am very picky when it comes to computers. Everything else I seem not to be. Strange? Probably. Well....Definitely. I like the best of the best. That why I always build my own desktops. Too bad laptops isnt that flexable when it comes to do-it-yourself projects. Oh, also does anyone by any chance know of a sleeve I can you for this laptop or a backpack? I check out the Targus XL Backpack and that thing would look like I would be going camping for two weeks...it's HuGE! Thanks for your help guys thus so far. Very much appreciated by my part. When I place my order today I will have to decide what HD to pick if I dont get any suggestions from you guys since this is the last day to return my M460XL for the M680XL.
