I know that the m680 is much weaker than the XPS2, but I am just curious how much weaker.

You had the 9300 so there is less of a difference than if you had the XPS2. Again, I just want to see what it is like.

I will also do the test when I get my m680. But it is good to know ahead of time.

How difficult is it to manually turn on/off the touchpad?

I work about 95% of the time with a mouse, but when I take my laptop home from the office I don't usually bring a mouse, so I would want to turn the touchpad on... is it a 2 second or 30 second process? I have a Compaq X1000 right now which has a handly little button by the touchpad which turns it on/off. Its one of my favorite features and don't know why other brands don't do the same.

After thinking about it, I guess it would be nice to know. I will do my best to get that done by this weekend. Potential Friday night. Thanks for patience.

There's no buton to turn it off (my zd7000 had that). As I stated in my review though, it's really well positioned. I have not bumped it once. But that's me. If you leave your Mouse Settings Icon displaying on your task bar (next to your clock) I would say it will take you about 5 seconds or less. I just timed myselft and it took 3 sec. 1. Double click the Icon, 2. Click the "Device Tab", 3. Click the "Disable" button, 4. Click the "OK" button. Sounds long but it's really quick. I hope this helped.

Sorry flashram. I missed your question this morning. I do have the same QSI drive as you. When I test it I'll let you know if I experience the same lack luster performance as you.

Am curious here. If you have a chance can you see how well, if at all, a (RGBs) 3 3 3 displays or (even a 2 2 2) on a 0 0 0 backround.
Thanks in advance...

It does help, and it alleviates my last nagging concern about this laptop... which is good since I've already ordered one!

Thanks for the great review and photos by the way... can't wait to get my own!!!

Done. I ran the 3DMark 2005 benchmark and added it to a new "Graphics" section just below the "Screen" part of the review. I also added a gallery of over 40 Call of Duty game screen shots. I hope you find it useful.

Again, very good review.

Thanks.

-------------------

So the graphic card of the m680 is about 1/2 as powerful as the 256MB 6800 Ultra cards.
I am not a gamer, so I am content at the result.

Well thanks for the bench....
Everything flys on my destop 9800 pro w/128 and 1 gig of ram and it benches at 1600-1700 so I guess a M680 at 2200-2300 would really be more than enough indeed.

Thanks again.

Looks that way. I'm a light gamer, and I think it works great. I had the 9300, but again, what's the point in having the fastest graphics in the world if what you're looking at looks like crap (unless you're one of the lucky ones who got a decent screen). I've been doing all kinds of graphic design work and even flash animation. It's astounding, and the screen just makes it better.

Glad you like the review. Let me know if you have any other questions. Oh, yah. Their sending me a replacement right away all for that little chip. I just asked for some more money or just the lid. They said they wanted me to have a quality machine. Pretty good service.

Are they sending you a brand new replacement laptop?

Yeah, you are right. What good is a laptop if you have a bad display, since you do 99.9% of the time looking at the screen.

I have to admit though, when I was using my XPS2, I had that great feeling of having the top-of-the-line graphic card. But that display just keep bothering me.

Now all I do is wait for the arrival of the m680.

Yah, a brand new one, for a chip, go figure. I said I'd take a couple hundred dollars but they said that the situation should be corrected.

I had that feeling too with the 9300. It went away pretty quickly because yes, you are looking at the screen 99.9% of the time when

Just hope you get a good replacement. Laptop3> was not so lucky and he is having problem with his m680.

Besides a bad display, another thing that I hate is fan noise.
Yeah, there is a little discrepancy about the fan noise (and when or how many fans are active) between Laptop<3's and Czm2000's laptop.

I wonder how my m680's fan function. Hopefully it will be quiet and the second fan not turned on all the time.

I specifically stated it goes to idle. Not off. But I really can't hear it unless I listen. It will kick on medium and then go back to off or idle.

I don't need a new one. This one is fine (except the chip). I offered to take a credit they offered to send me a new one. I wasn't going to say no. If there is a fan problem with the new one then I will just swap the screens. Problem solved. I'll let you know how it works out.

How long will that going to take for you to get your replacement? I ordered mine on 05/07/2005 and still have not got any new email update yet.

Did they say you will get a replacement after May 7? If they did, then I would probably get the laptop before you get your replacement.

My apologies for any discrepancy between my experiences and someone elses, but I have said that this is my take/opinion. Perception is everything as I stated in my review. I've read reviews and then purchased something and loved it. But I've also had situations in which I hated it. It comes down to personal preference and each individuals experience. My "little" fan is not really audible. When it kicks into medium I can hear it if I'm not deep into thought, and I've only had it kick into high once.

Note: No offense to Laptop <3 but if you have read any of his posts he's HUGE into not hearing his fans. He has also posted some comments that in my opinion don't quite make sense and I even recall another member pointing that out in a following post. Thant's not to be jusdgemental because I'm sure that's the way he sees things. But then again, that's his perception.

A possible solution is FanGUI. I have not taken the time to try it, but if I do I will give you an update. If you are super sensative to fans though, a desktop type replacement may not be the right choice. I don't know how sensative to these you are. I just got my new Canon SD500 and I wanted to test out the video. If I get the chance maybe I'll take some video/aduio of it and post it.
