remove it all

Everything......all you need is Quickset for the front buttons (on-screen visual meters)

Every Dell machine I buy gets a fresh install of Windows XP Pro. I install the latest drivers off the Dell support site along with Quickset. You wouldn't believe how much faster the machine performs.

Removing the Bloatware really makes that much of a difference? I got mine three days ago and am considering the fresh install.

It does make that much of a difference... especially with lowe amounts of system ram.

Get rid of it all - doing so will improve your boot time by a worthwhile amount, especially if you have a slower hard disk. Also your system will generally be more stable - less stuff running means less chance of something crashing.

I have a 7200 Rpm HD but I can always use more speed. Especially since I am a Gamer. Thanks for the advice.

Im not very familiar with other companys versions of windows xp, is all that unnecessary crap installed with windows automatically or is there a way to dump all that when reinstalling windows?

what do you mean by "unnecessary crap"? Do you mean extra programs like virus scan and musicmatch? If so, a clean install of windows doesn't include these programs. You do get all the nifty DOS applications though.

I really don't believe it. There isn't that much bloatware on it. If you uninstall everything, delete the registry entries, run registry mechanic it's just fine. I mean a clean install won't hurt anything it's just a pain in the ass.

EXORCISE the factory install; reformatting & reinstalling is easy; just takes some time.

Ok, lets make this simple. Formatting, and installing your OS right after getting your laptop from Dell is totally silly, and a waste of time. Just perform the following: start/run/msconfig/. Now de-check most everything, once thats done, go to add-remove and uninstall what you don't want.

Re-boot, perform disk clean up, and defragment.

After this your Dell laptop will run just as fast as if you formatted, and there will be no need to download, install, and configure drivers.

I have to agree with that. Run Microsoft bootvis and the start up will speed up.

Which things do I un-check in which tab? There are a lot of things in msconfig, I don't want to un-check the wrong things. Sorry, I am new at this.

Uncheck everything except your virus program (i.e.) Mcafee or Norton (or whatever your using.

No reformatting is not silly. You can never get rid of all the traces unless you get into the registry and frankly i don't know how many people are able to do this. Some of us never 'just' uncheck or remove a program, we actually get into the registry and delete everything including the prefetch folder. Anyway generally i reformat because its quicker and this way i don't even bother with the drivers dell gives me i just find the newest ones and do a fresh install without embedding them in older versions.

To each his own. Do you format once a year too, because the same thing happends over time as you install, and uninstall software. Frankly unless you have a problem when you first get your laptop it is 100% silly to format. If it makes you feel better, by all means, but in reality it is not necessary.

Keep telling yourself that. I gaurantee a freshly formatted laptop will run circles around one that you have attempted to "modify" into running faster. There is something you will miss, and if not that, your registry will be clogged like no other. Prior to the format I could hardly move my mouse without 5 windows popping up asking me to register this or scan that.

I also format my machines because I prefer XP Pro to XP Home.
