that may be so, but users will be looking for the best performance. So they are going to sell more units by putting in a better processor and users buying the addition RAM if needed, than putting in a lesser processor and buying a new CPU for an extra couple of hundred $

i'd much rather have the best possible process in the lappy and have to upgrade other less expensive things than having to buy and put in a new CPU for optimum performance.

Absolutely right. The most important is have the knowledge for gain performance in "your" computer, and dont take only the market offers you

Man all these updates drive me crazy! i heard someone somewhere else on the forum say that they change their lappy every 6 months. It is a bit like digital cameras no? i just bought my camera, it isn't even out yet in my country, but it has been discontinued in the US.
I bought a Ferrari 3200, I want to get the new Hitachi 7K100 hardrive, 2 gb of 400mhz ram, I hope this will do me for 2 years...

That's the wonder of the consumer society we're all currently living in, something newer and (apparently) better is always coming down the road.

Should I Upgrade?

Guys... Been reading about this whole fuss about the Ferrari 4000... Hmmm, I'm a gamer. I'm pursuing a course in Digital Entertainment Technology. Well, I used to run a P4 2.4 Desktop with Geforce 4 Ti 4800. My dad used alot of it, so I decided to get myself a laptop. Went there, with the intention of the Acer 8104, but I personally love Ferrari, as in the brand and the cars, and since I game alot, I got the Ferrari. Well...

With all the fuss about it, I was thinking if I should upgrade to the Ferrari 4000... I mean, I don't know if black would really go well with Ferrari. And... is it worth the upgrade for the Graphics and CPU? Personally I play Half-Life 2 on my 3400 and it runs just well. I just want a friendly opinion on whether it's worth upgrading my Ferrari 3400. I've only had it for 2 months. =( And I've a scratch on the lid. Damn... Well, I guess things like that happen...

So...question. To upgrade, or not?

If HL2 runs fine on your Ferrari 3400 then i would say it's good enough for now. You're probably better off waiting on the generation after the ferrari 4000 if you want to upgrade. By then, you'll probably have a dual core cpu and a better gpu than the ATI x700.

Umm right side USB ports?!

Ummm... is it just me, or why haven't they moved the 3 USB on the right side??? I mean, that's pretty awkward to me, to an otherwise awesome speedbook!

could be for easier accessibility for right handers or since the laptop has a slot load drive now, not as much room is taken up by a tray popping out and possibly hitting the usb plugs.. just a thought, but i think the older models had slot load too... i don't like them being in the front, then I have to reach around the cables to put a disc in... but i don't think the placement of usb ports could take away from this great laptop (fingers crossed), any more news on who will carry this (new egg?), and any new dates?

I emailed Newegg on thursday and asked them if they will carry the new Ferrari 4000. No answer yet.

How does the X700 stack up against a 6800 ultra PCI-Ex16? Basically, I am wondering about the overall differences between a Ferrari 4000 and an XPS Gen 2. I personally like AMD so go Ferarri, but I also like Nvidia so go Dell! Dunno what to do, maybe I'll just buy more games for my DS instead
post #94 of 132
The X700 is comparable to the 6600 although the X700 is faster; the Ultra will kill the X700, the X700 stock gets around 6k on 3DMark03 while the XPS2 gets 11+k

Anyone know why Acer didnt think to include the crystal bright glossy screen on this. Would be almost perferct for me if it had it. I was thinking that their top of the line notebook with a high res screen would have it, but according to the guy in the other thread who got his the screen is a matte finish. Now i dont know if i want to get the Acer 5020 series which has all of the same features pretty much but with the glossy screen, even though it is low res. That carbon fiber looks so good though.

Maybe I am off base here, but I actually dont like the glossy screens. Only one I have ever really used was a Gateway something-or-other GX (the one with the AMD 3700+, nice laptop for the price). I had a whitebox ECS G556 laptop and a Latitude D505, now have an Inspiron 9300 and none of them had the glossy screen, so it is possible that I am just used to it. Actually, none of the LCD panels for my desktops have them either. Anyway, the point I'm getting at is do more people prefer the glossy screen or the regular and what is supposed to be the benefit of the glossy?

The XPS2 will kick the Faerrari's but in gaming. The CPUs are comparable, but the 6800ultra is waayyyyy better than the x700. On the flipside the Ferrari is much lighter, has much smaller dimensions (15.4" instead of 17" screen) and will most likely have better battery life (because of the less power-intensive GPU and smaller screen, not bec of processor). If you're just going to keep your laptop at your desk and occasionally move it (LAN parties or room to room moving) I'd say go with the XPS2. If you are going to be carrying the laptop around a lot, go with the Ferrari. I wouldn't advise waiting for a laptop with Turion and the 6800ultra if you're in the US though, because it won't happen anytime soon thanks to Intel.
