Reinstalling Windows XP Pro

Just a quick one.

I purchased the 300 dollar version of XP Pro w/SP1.

Someone just told me that if I have to re-install, I will have to call Microsoft.

I think they are wrong, but I have no interest at the moment in proving my theory.

Am I right?

Thanks--Mike

If you already have Windows XP (assuming that you have Windows XP), why did you buy another version?

Yes, if you bought a new version with a different CD key, you will need to activate it upon install.

You don't have to call MS unless you have no internet connection to REACTIVATE your copy. Plus, I am assuming you are reinstalling on the SAME HARDWARE as before (i.e. a re-install).

There are some variable that are allowed to change before MS denies your activation, but if you're just re-installing, it'll reactivate over the net just fine.

I have reinstalled my XP Pro about 12 times on my laptop, and each time it reactivated just fine.

Sorry JeffL for not being more specific. I ordered my 8890 with no OS. I bought XP Pro at Best Buy.

Thanks for the help

Why did you spend $300 on XP Pro?

I copied and pasted the below from an old post of mine:

Just some advice I got.
Apparently, and remember my expertise level (zippy), you have alot more control when setting up your computer, if you do install yourself. Pre-installed, no matter what it is, will follow a generic-default procedure. I also talked to my LAN Admin at work, and he said if it were him, he would like to have the box, manual, and all the disks, not just the recovery disk from SAGER. He said the recovery disk would only fix x.x% of your problems. I couldn't really tell from my research the difference between buying the entire product and a having the recovery disk, the forums seemed to be split, so I went the safe, if not more expensive route.

Granted, it would have been much less of a head-ache and cheaper to get it pre-installed, but I'm kinda enjoying this learning experience. The PROS to my choice are peace of mind with the original disks, and more "Options" during the install. Now, I don't know what those options are, but I'll get there.
