Dell 19-inch widescreen laptop Due in 2006 - Page 2

It may be bigger, but it could conceivably be as light or even lighter. I believe the XPS GEN 2 is both larger and lighter than the original XPS GEN.

A 19 inch laptop, even if it weighed 11-12 pounds, would still be infinitely more portable than a desktop. Believe me, I've hauled around my old Dell 4100 enough to know how much I wished it *only* weighed 15 pounds, instead of 15-20 for the CRT (est) and another 10 for the case. Not to mention the mass of wires, peripherials, and assorted jumbles that made it a computing hell compared to my "heavy" XPS2. I haul the thing everywhere with me, and with a 19", I probably wouldn't have any problems either.

As long as they keep the laptops under 15 pounds I'll be fine with them. Of course if I have a choice between a 10 pound 19" Dell and a 13lb 17" Sager or 15lb 19" AW, I think I know which computer I'll go with, performance being equal.

I would probably buy a 19" notebook if it got thinner. The chances are that it might since there will be enough room sideways to spread stuff around. How about something 1.2" thick and weighing in at 8.5 pounds?

Exactly, I have taken my Desktop and Monitor to lans before and it is a real hassle. My monitor is a 19" CRT and it is pretty damn heavy. Another plus is not having to disconnect and recconect nearly as many wires. Just pop in the power supply and USB 2.0 Mouse and I am ready to play some games , and I get to watch everyone as they hook up their keyboard/monitor/speakers/mice/microphones/etc, plus desktops usually need a Power Strip for the seperate monitor and computer power cables so that is even more to carry around. For a notebook all you need is one outlet. Try having a lan in 2 rooms with 6 people with desktops and a total of 4 outlets and you'll know what I mean. The guy with the laptop (not me at the time ) had the easiest and quickest time setting up.

Bigger might be cheaper for Dell

There are a lot of reports out there regarding shortages of 17" screens due to the huge popularity of 17" screened laptops now. Meanwhile, 20" desktop screens are outselling the 19" ones. Dell might actually be able to buy the 19" screens for less.

Imagine if Dell can come up with an Xbrite equivalent screen coating on a 19 inch LCD? Man that would be sweetness....
As long as they offer a 1920x1200 resolution 19" display I'll buy it. Anything higher and I won't since the native res. will be too high for gaming.

Plasmas have a bit of the opposite problem as LCDs. It is tougher to make them smaller. The highest res. 42 inch plasmas are only 1024. Have to go to 50 inch to get to the 1366 resolution. Interestingly, the higher resolution 42 inchers all seem to use 1024x768 in 16x9 format...very unsquare pixels.
