Today AMD and Crytek announced that the highly anticipated 64-bit update to Crytek's and Ubisoft’s award-winning PC game Far Cry®, optimized for AMD Athlon™ 64 processor-based systems, is now available for download from http://www.amd.com/farcry. This new version of Far Cry was designed on AMD64 technology and features exclusive 64-bit enhancements that deliver a rich and immersive gaming experience.

“Gamers who play the 32-bit version of Far Cry will be ecstatic with the 64-bit version of Far Cry because AMD64 technology has transformed the 2004 best seller into an even more adrenaline-charged game,” said Marty Seyer, corporate vice president and general manager, AMD Microprocessor Solutions Sector. “Die-hard gamers know the single-core AMD Athlon 64 FX processor delivers the world’s best gaming performance.”

PC users who smartly invested in AMD’s premiere AMD Athlon 64 FX processor for gaming can now experience the next evolution in high-performance 64-bit computing. Because most games today are single-threaded, gamers’ performance needs will be best served with the single-core AMD Athlon 64 FX processor.

With the winning combination of AMD64 processors, the recently released Microsoft® Windows® XP Pro x64 Edition operating system and 64-bit optimized Far Cry software, gamers will notice larger and more detailed areas to explore, exclusive 64-bit maps, longer view distances, unique and exciting game object textures and a 64-bit exclusive “barrel storage area” that demonstrates impressive, life-like object physics movement.

“AMD64 platforms are providing game developers with incredible game design, flexibility and freedom. There are specific enhancements we wanted to create, like view distances, texture details, map sizes and graphics that 32-bit platforms could not handle,” said Cevat Yerli, chief executive officer and president at Crytek. “Working with AMD64 processors in a 64-bit world has given us valuable insights on how we can continue to leverage 64-bit processing in the future. What is most eye-opening about the 64-bit Far Cry is that we are only now beginning to tap into the potential power of the AMD64 platform.”

With the new era of 64-bit programming, game developers now have a rich landscape of tools to develop games that a few years ago could never have been imagined.

The patches to enable 64-bit Far Cry are available today at http://www.amd.com/farcry. Current owners of the 32-bit version of Far Cry and Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition can download the patches and begin playing 64-bit Far Cry immediately. For more information about how AMD64 technology takes the 64-bit version of Far Cry to a whole new level, visit http://www.amd.com/farcry.

Wow, pretty impressive detail and textures. I read though in one of the reviews that a faster cpu doesn't even matter, what does is the faster gpu.. I think it was first or second review - one with all the pictures of the levels.

I don't understand why is this game so popular and so good? I played it and yes graphics are good and all good but the game play is most horrible. I mean shooting 5 times in the head and the guy is still alive? What is the point this sux so much. Hate that game for that.

They added some extra grass objects, bump mapping on rocks, a couple new birds and insects, slightly further viewing range, and a few exclusive multiplayer maps. I'll point out that all of these new features could be added to the 32-bit version.

I'm getting the Sager 4750 myself. Best value 64 bit you can find right now, It has most drivers etc to work ok with Windows XP 64 bit http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=81210

9860 is just to high price for me, to big, and to non-mobile. But if all you are after are latest 3D gaming at highest possible res and detail and you got the cash, dont need much battery life, and are ok with thick and heavy I would suggest you look at the 9860 with an Intel 64 bit CPU. Be prepared to put up the cash to configure any decent config though!

Still some 32 bit benchmarks/games will be a tad slower in 64 bit and other abit faster aslong as they are native 64 bit and really programed to take advantage of 64 bit instructions it should be worth it though. Sooner or later eveybody will want it for games and other resons...

like with any new technology, it will take a while to become main stream, and even if the changes could have been made to 32 bit, its a good kick start 64 bit needed in gaming?

what a joke.

does intel p4 6xx cut it?

Seriously, u would buy a 64bit rig just so you can enable a patch that doesn't even use the 64bit cpu in the rig?

I'm not knocking 64bit machines, I just don't understand the logic.

Personaly I wouldn't base any of my computer phurchases based on new 3D gaming alone, as it's not a big part of what I'm using my computer for. But I know many here does base their purchases on raw 3D gaming performance alone, nothing wrong with that, it's all up to the individual.

Frankly I'm not even interested in Far Cry and most other FPS games to begin with, but with a Sager 4750 I would have the abillity to try it out if I would like in 64 bit mode just for fun if nothing else. What I'm looking for is features and compatibility sub 10lbs paird with value and if 64 bit compatiblity is in there aswell it doesn't hurt! To continously keep up with the latest in 3Dgaming is luckely not in my interest. If so I would just get a socket 939 desktop PC and a 24" or bigger monitor as it will look and perform more awesome than any notebook could ever do.

For all those none believers, i did my own review - however unlike the other reviews, i didnt add Extra content to the 64bit version. So i just compared the 32bit with the 64bit version - NO OTHER DIFFERENCES -

HOLY MOLY!!!

i thought hmm, as i got 64bit oem and installed it, i should benchmark some results. So (on a fresh os install) i downloaded drivers and installed the game, and then using HardwareOC farcry bench 1.4.1 i benchmarked 3 levels

System spec
3200+ newcastle
msi k8n neo plat
9800pro herc @ 5.4 Cats
512mb kingston value ram
audigy 2 zs

So, then i set the settings to 1024x768 @ medium, sound : 5.1 all boxes checked (eax, hardware support etc)

Results
PC Games banchmark level - 56.71
Ubisoft Volcano - 73.32
HardwareOC River (settings to VERY HIGH) 34.7

Then downloaded and installed 64bit Farcry

Results
PC Games banchmark level - 73.32
Ubisoft Volcano - 112.21
HardwareOC River (settings to VERY HIGH) 53.52

The benchmarks ran a lot smoother, there was no freezing that i normally get (due to only 512 ram) so then i thought hmm, how high can i go, so i re-benchmarked the River test

However i ran 1280x1024 @ very high at HardwareOC River - 42.03

which is better than the 32bit version and it looked better so then i went further

1280x1024 Very High @ medium aa and medium at HardwareOC River - 27.32

so, i must say 64bit is a MAJOR INCREASE IMO. The reviews i have seen show little/no performance gain - however they use maximum graphic settings *cough*idiots*cough* and then use the ADDON PACK for 64bit - so ofcourse its going to run slower. Going to get the addon pack and benchmark some results.

so 64bit is ALOT BETTER!!!! when the game is actually 100% 64bit code, unlike riddick and shadow ops that have a few dll changes.
