Sager 9880 (NP9880) release - Page 9

After having returned my 9860 last month and patiently waiting for the new release with the ultra card I'm not so sure I want one. I really, really liked the WSXGA with the glossy screen. A co-worker has one and it was one of the main features that attracted me to a Sager.

The SXGA resolution was small enough but I could deal with it. I don't think I'd be happy with the smaller UXGA and if you change from the native resolution I've read that the quality and text aren't as sharp.

I want the XP Pro OS, not the Media Center version. I also want a TV tuner but I understand you have to get this Media Center OS with it.

Maybe I'll just build a mini PC (what do they call those little boxes that are becoming popular?), get a 17-inch LCD from the Dell outlet store and save a ton of money over the $3300 I was ready to spend on a new Sager.

Unforntunately they do not ship internationally. They're also religious fanatics.
What difference does it make if they are religious or not???

Yeah, I'm torn between a Sager 9880 and a custom SFF (Small Form Factor) PC.

Here's the machine in my wish list on NewEgg for about $1,500 without monitor and no graphics card:
-AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939
-2 x CORSAIR XMS 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered
-2 x Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 73GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 (Raid 0)
-Shuttle SN25P Socket 939 AMD Athlon 64 FX/Athlon 64/Sempron
-Shuttle PF60 XPC Carrying Case - Retail
Subtotal: $1,456.50

I didn't go for the AMD 4000 since in a couple months I want to upgrade to a Dual Core AMD when they become available.

Sager Plusses: Powerful, more expensive. More portable.
SSF Plusses: More powerful, less expensive. Less portable. Upgradable to Dual Core.

MCE Tuner, Alternate Software

So I just ordered up two 9880's, and chose to opt for the new MPEG2 tuner. Of course, this was before knowing that it was only supported under MCE, which I can't use because I need domain functionality. Nonetheless, I am not going to change me order, as I am sure software will be available soon enough to control this device. In fact, has anyone seen this:

http://www.gbpvr.com/

Anyone know the actual model of the tuner? That would give us something to research on.

Now, if only this thing had 955x chipset. That's what I was really hoping for..

After doing some digging, this software supports the Yuan MPC622:

http://mediaportal.sourceforge.net/

It's Open Source, and based on XMBC (for those who are familiar). I use XBMC, and it is VERY cool.

I sincerely doubt it. : )
I maintain the clevo reseller list on this forum (search for 'clevo shootout').

Eventhough I do have a problem with religion, as its the source of most of the killing on this planet, I have no problem with people believing what they want. I just don't like people to tell me what I should believe when I request pricing for a laptop. That is kinda rude in my book.
But this is not about that, so nevermind.

Actually, xtremenotebooks.com doesn't offer the glossy at this time. I emailed them and this is what they said:

The current 9097 will ship with a non glossy WUXGA display. Future offerings will be a glossy WSXGA+ and also a glossy WUXGA but the arrival date of both those displays has yet to be announced.

I think I'll be buying the 9880 sager later today, can't wait

Yeah, they removed the 'glossy' claim from their site.

I informed with Hypersonic, theirs is a LG-Philips one. This screen used to cause a lot of havoc over at the Dell XPS forums, due to sparkle and such, but lately more an more people are content with them. I suppose a new revision came out?

Does anyone know if the remote with the new tuner has more ability to control windows?

Luke, when you do the review, can you compare benchmarks with those you did in the earlier msg about the 9860 w/ the 6800 Ultra ... and if possible can you compare it to any XPS 2 benchmarks that have been published?

Oh, and how's that review coming?
luke, do you know exactly what the prices of the two screens will be after the 500 rebate expires?

Wow, they never learn, do they?

Pentium M or Turion beat Pentium 4 in a notebook ANY day.
depends what you're using it for. if you travel and want that then fine but most people here want just a slightly portable monster that does high rendering and fast fps gaming. dont flame what you dont like

Not the least bit true, if you use PCMARK04 and do a bench, you will clearly see that the fastest P4's beat the 2.1Ghz@533 Pm's in several area's. This is even all the more true with the 2Mb L2 cache P4's, with those 6.xx CPU's the M has no chance. People have gotten arrogant about the chip because of the XPS 2 benchmarks. People confuse 3DMARK05 scores with PCMARK04 scores all the time on these boards. The Pm is a fantastic accomplishment, but its not nearly as powerful as people think (All-around performance). Games/Internet = Pm's all you need. Games/Internet/Photoshop/Multitasking = High end P4 - 560-670 series.

I ordered a 9880 a couple days ago and this morning I noticed the EM64T processors. I called them up and changed from the 3.2ghz 540 I originally ordered and switched to the 3.0ghz EM64T 630 processor.

From what I understand the processor supports the 64bit extended memory capability. With this processor would I be able to install the 4gb of ram the mobo is capable of supporting if I'm using the x64 Windows OS? Not that I "need" 4gb of memory, just wondering if I could now.
