XPS Gen2 6k Club - Page 2

Thread Starter
Bob,

I didn't have to go through all that "trouble" (even though it takes less then 30 seconds to accomplish) to get a score over 6k. I did however notice a marked improvement in heat dissipation. It was one of those, "I'd like to try that" situations. I attempted the latter half to see if it would add a marked improvement on my score, and I got a whole whopping 6 extra points (like 1/10 of a frame added). So besides just keeping my XPS nice and cool, the little experiment (if you would call it that) serves no performance advantage asofar seen in Doom3, Half Life 2 and Benchmarking.

On a side note: I have a de-humidifier in my living quarters, as I have a lot of electronics, and moisture isn't a good thing. Although, too dry is not very good, so it's pretty stable. Plus, when it gets hot here, it gets too hot and the humidity kills me - double purpose. It's not for my laptop; however, my home setup and various other "goodies" wouldn't do well with all that moisture.

One last thing, you did mention that the 75.xx drivers are running too hot, and are piss-poor for you system. The highest my temp spiked was 76C during Doom3 after about 2 hours. I decided to stay a little cautious after you mentioned that heat issues are problematic with those drivers, but I have yet to have a problem. Nor, have I heard of people having a major heat problem with them as well. It is, however, more then likely that one's system will run much hotter with them installed compared the the WHQL cert ones.

Pip,

I'm pretty sure that when you download Coolbits from Guru3d.com that it will self install and you won't have to go through the REGEDIT. But, you really don't need to download Coolbits because you can create it in REGEDIT if that doesn't work (but, I don't see why it shouldn't). Creating Coolbits in RegEdit is INCREDIBLY simple procedure. If, on the off chance your having trouble. Just ask and I'll tell you what to do.

well said 49 just UNREALISTIC

5k club was enough coz not many of us can hit the 6k

Do you guys keep the stock cooling or do you modify the video card like so -> http://www.bay-wolf.com/8500videoheat.htm?

The chewing gum that came on my 8600' vid card kept my temps around 35 degrees Celsius higher than with the mod.

So I am a member now?

Ran a 6055, so I guess that means I am in! LOL!

I flashed my bios in steps to 525/1300.
I scored a max of 6104 3DMarks so I'll have to start the 6.1K club now I guess

The temps maxed out at 71 degress a couple of times after they were 80+ before, evan after the AS5 application. Guess the AS5 is settling nicely.

I'm using the 80.40 drivers and am unable to use auto-overclocking any more.
If this is because of the drivers or because of the flashed bios is a mystery to me, but with a score like mine... I'll live

I think that is great but honestly, XPS2 runs everything out today at acceptable FPS and OCing isn't for everyone. Congratulations on 6k though. I don't know how big a difference it is. It is probably very big but it all goes back to wants and needs. And my needs are satisfied.

I flashed with the same as tijgert did but used the 76.50 drivers and got 6125. Tried to flash higher but 3dmark wouldnt run anymore. This was on my first system .. had it replaced since then and havent even run 3dmark on this new on yet
post #29 of 45
mmm... a couple of marks higher but slower cpu... wonder if your drivers are better than the 80.40 or if the 6800u just isn't demanding enough.

Ehhh, may I join you now?

After rejoining the 6K club I'm afraid I will have to leave again.
Running 3DMark05 is worthless as stresstesting, HDR demo is a LOT better at it.
However I found out the hard way that certain scenes from Far Cry really take the cake.
3DMark05 = 71 degrees
HDR demo = 81 degrees
Far Cry = 88 degrees
Yes, 88 friggin degrees! Mind you, only at very specific scenes.
88 degrees was too much for 512/1300 and it froze repeatedly, so I'll be going back to 500/1250 just in case.

If you're interested I can post the save game and the exact screenie that you have to run to stress it to the max.

Mind you, I had quite a nice jump in scores going from 80.40 to 77.77, those drivers rock! I came to 6167 @ 512/1300.

Slightly off-topic. I can't even dream of dreaming of achieving the 6k mark, but I just want to know if HDR demo means the Real Time HDR IBL program. What settings do you have it set at for maximum stress?

Also, if you can bear with me for just another second or two, does it mean that 77.77 drivers are even better than the 80.40 drivers? Thank you!!!

Yea I would like to know how big is the difference too. Say my gpu is stock hitting 5288 with Dell 77.24 driver and you guys that hit 6000+ on 3dmark05. So how many fps increase do you have over 5288 for that matter. Say CS:Source what is your lowest fps, average, and highest. Im talking about 32+ player server going at it in one spot. Also post your setting for source.

You won't see much improvement in an actual CS:S game. When one starts playing in a 32+ player game, the game becomes CPU limited at many points. However, the video stress test will show a much higher score as does 3DMark05 or anything else severely stressing the graphics card. Also, an game in which the graphics card is the bottleneck will also show tremendous improvement.

Anyway I just wanted to post and say good job to you guys, those are insane results I'm also curious, what drivers do you find give you the best score?

Chalk me up for the 6k club... 6131 with the BIOS mod, stock cooling

What do you use for stress testing? What drivers?
6021... Im in aswell whit a 512/1250 bios, no extra cooling. The temp is leveling out at 80 so Ill have to see if its worth it.
And since this is my first post, hello to all

Stress testing with the F.E.A.R. SP Demo 1600x1200, 4x AA, no AF, no soft shadows, everything else max.

At 525/1250 it freezes up under extreme stress like flashlight + zoom in a room with several lights. But in 3dMark05 it doesn't freeze or artifact, however at 525/1300 it does start getting artifacts.

Rock solid at 500/1150, going to bump the core up a bit slightly... seems like when the core is too high it freezes, but when the memory is too high it only gets artifacts, no freezes. Think my core stable limit is going to be around 515 or so, and memory 1200 probably.

Stable at 513/1200, 6001 in 3dMark05, still in the club!
