problems installing ati drivers in ubuntu 5.04 amd64

Hi.

I am a long time Ubuntu advocate as you might already know. I used to use Ubuntu 5.04 x86 when i had my laptop before the much needed repairs. when i got it yesterday, today i installed ubuntu amd64 5.04. I got the wifi to work, now i am on video troubles. In the 32 bit version i got the drivers up and running in no time, the 64 bit is giving me issues.

I added to my sources.list, opened synaptic and apt-get xorg-drivers-fglrx and ati-fglrx-control. Then i opened xterm and

PHP Code:
sudo su
password
:
root@lappy#: gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
gedit poped up with xorg.conf. I navigated down to the "Device" section and changed the driver name from "ati" to "fglrx" then i pressed Alt + Cntrl + Backspace, and then it tries to reload x. i wait and I wait and i get a black screen (not text mode, just a black screen). So i had to restart in safemode and change it back to "ati" for time being.

anyone have any ideas what might cause the issue and how i can resolve it?

so i am guessing i got no love on this forum....any ideas from anyone...anyone at all..or am i just getting paranoid. that is just all because well...i cant wait to start using linux. windows isn't working right on my laptop so now i am using my pocket pc. pocket pcs are so useless when it comes to doing important things. i need my lappy back and graphics working..

sorry, i just had to get the rant out. and sorry for poor grammar and spelling, i am really tiered and using a bluetooth foldable THink Outside keyboard for pocket pcs.

Well I don't know how much love you can find in 90min on the forum but given time I imagine someone can help you. In the interim I recommend you give the Ubuntu Forums a thorough onceover especially the AMD 64 section. Doing a quick glance I came across a post dealing with similar problems as yours.

Not sure if it's going to help you but it might be a start, I know it's helped me out a lot. Best of luck to you.

Im a lucky nvidia guy but Ill help if i can. You will need to post your /var/log/Xorg.log file after trying to run with fgrlx. I would also suggest dropping gdm and boot to console until this is fixed. Its so much easier to troubleshoot X issues this way. You also might wanna backup your xorg.conf file and run ati's X configuration program.

looked around....thought about it, and i just installed ubuntu x86 i386 because 64 bit still lacks some important features. for one thing, there is no 64 bit flash player. i have no installed ati drivers yet...but i assume i will have no problems with it. right now my concern is to apt-get upgrade all 400odd packages

hehe part of the joys of linux is being able to choose which battles we want to fight. Glad your baby is back and working.
