IE's popup blocker is broke

Thread Starter
For some reason the popup blocker built into the SP2 of IE isn't working for me anymore. I set it to high (block all popups) and ensure it's enabled, but it just doesn't stop ANYTHING from popping up. I have no idea what is wrong with it. I restored all the default IE settings, restarted, opened up a window and then restored all my settings, restarted. No change.
I run my security settings at a max all the time so having a broken popup blocker is unacceptable. BTW please don't suggest switching browsers. I am aware of the advantages of Firefox but some brower-based games I play don't support it.

HELP!

I run both the popup blocker with IE/SP2 and also the Google popup blocker. Some popups still get through. If I bothered to investigate (search the web, check out the code for the offending web sites) I suppose I could learn why. But I am lazy.

It's not just a few websites, it's ALL popups. I wrote some simple pages with javascript to cause popups and they popped up. So the blocker is definitely broke. It displays in the corner that "Popups were allowed" even though the settings don't allow any popups or exceptions.

Firefox...
Hey guys, you need to read the initial post more closely. He asked about how to fix the pop-up blocker in MSIE, not about alternatives to MSIE AND, in fact, he specifically asked not to be "recommended" to use other browsers. Obviously, he's using MSIE for a reason.

And honest too

Hooga, can you give us an example site on which the MSIE popup blocker doesn't work? Does it fail on every site containing popups?

Also, have you tried a Google search?
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...not+working%22

I don't have XP SP2 so I can't help you with some of the specifics. Have you seen M$' Documentation on it? You know Micro$oft, sometimes the simplest setting is hidden 17 levels down a menu or something

I know I'm almost eating my words here now, but -- if all else fails -- have you tried using a MSIE shell browser (examples: Maxithon, AvantBrowser, and Others) with its own popup blocker? Since these shell browsers rely on MSIE's code for reading webpages, any site that works in MSIE will work exactly the same in any MSIE shell browser.

Since when did IE have a pop-up blocker...

SP2--to the best of my knowledge. But I am lazy.

Lol, run windows update sir.

To solve teh original question click tools => popupblocker and make sure its ON not OFF.

if its ON and still not working twiddle with the settings.

I have no need for IE, Firefox is the only browser needed.

I realise he said MSIE only..but he also asked how to get rid of pop-ups, and the only way to get rid of pop-ups in IE is to not use it. Since I want to help the guy out I suggested Firefox..

Much as I hate to point this out... A lot of Microsoft stuff like Windows update uses ActiveX - therefore, IE.

Though I avoid it to the extent possible, it's sometimes unavoidable.

IE is so hopelessly outdated against Firefox it isnt even funny. If youre using IE - just... don't anymore.

Not that I want to start a flame war here, but I have to agree with what Fred Langa said in his newsletter a few weeks ago:

Does all this mean that Firefox is a bad browser? Not at all. It means
it's a normal browser, and will require vigilance to use safely.

FYI, I think Firefox is OK, but once I install enough extensions for it to be usable for my liking, the UI is far too slow to be even usable.

Ok I found a control, that like epp_b said, was burried under about 17 levels of crap. Tools > Options > Security > Custom Level > Scroll > "Use Pop-up Blocker"

Apparently that overrides the setting that's Tools > Options > Privacy > "Block Pop-ups".

Firefox is partially incompatible with one of the browser-based games I play. So I don't use it. Until now, I've never had any problems with M$IE. I actually managed to keep my system completely clean (according to Adaware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and M$ AntiSpyware Beta) using IE as my only browser. If Firefox worked for all my purposes I would use it.

Since I haven't had to explore extensions at all I'm not sure sure what functionality this browser is lacking. I do my banking, browsing, flash anim, streaming vids, basically everything I can think of and most definitely everything that IE did EXCEPT for Windows Update, which incidentally, still works fine if you allow it to automatically connect in the tray, no need to use IE to get updates.

I'm not trying to bash here, but I honestly haven't once missed IE and had actually forgotten about pop-ups till this discussion; no game is worth that nonsense. Not to mention the fact that any browser that doesn't have tabbed browsing is..well..hopelessly out of date. IMO of course.

Uh, PDFs ?

Is it easy to get used to a tabbed system like firefox? I'm so used to alt-tabbing multiple IE windows I do it without thinking.
Yes, it's easy - instead of alt-tab, you learn to use ctrl-tab... similar enough that you get used to it in no time flat
post #20 of 27
IE is broke. Not IE's popup blocker

Ctrl-Tab to switch tabs is so much easier than Alt-Tab because you can see everything in front of you rather than guess which of the active windows you are tryign to get. Also makes for a much less cluttered Taskbar.

Yes, Firefox can break too. But it is infinitely easier to fix when broken than IE.
