8600 Touchpad and Stick stopped working!

I was installing some Canon software for a Canon scanner and was rebooting as instructed, but during the reboot the computer started beeping loudly. I pressed the off button and then turned it on. It turned on okay but the touchpad and stick do not move The keys on the keyboard work. I download dell driver check software. Apparently the touchpad drivers are corrupted/missing. I downloaded and installed drivers, but for some reason the drivers will not install!

Would installing drivers from Dell CD make a difference? I would hate to reinstall windows and all my software.

Anybody have any ideas or had similiar problem?

Did you uninstall the corrupted drivers before installing the downloaded drivers? Try going into Device Manager and uninstalling your Touchpad and then reboot and let Windows reinstall it.

I have the same problem, my battery ran out (I was draining for a full recharge), and for some reason it freaked out right when forcing the stand-by mode, and when I plugged in and turned it back on, my touchpad wouldn't work. I've looked in my device manager, and there's nothing there that says touchpad. Any help is appreciated.

I did not use the 8600 for a couple day until Sunday I thought it's time to fix it. I turned it on and it booted up and the trackpad and stick worked

The trackpad icon in the task appeared, which it didn't before

Ransomed1,

I would charged the battery and after its charged turn it on... I was going to try using an external mouse to see if it would work. And/or try to reinstall trackpad drivers.

Good luck

Touchpad

Well, I charged it up, and turned it on, and the touchpad still does not work. I've plugged a mouse in and that works fine. The Touchpad shows up in the system tray icon and I can disable and enable it there, but it always acts as if it's disabled (ie: when I touch it, nothing happens).

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for it. Still no success.

I've gone and looked in System / Device Manager / Mice and other pointing devices and only my mouse shows up there. If I unplug it, then the option for "and other pointing devices" disappears altogether.

Would replacing my Registry with a backup help with this problem?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

1. Have you tried booting to "Safe Mode" & last good configuration?

2. Take the battery out and reinstall it. try booting using battery only. i wonder if you had a short?

Your touchpad should appear if it installed. that's where my toshiba appears.

My toshiba came with a recovery cd. Did download touchpad drivers from toshiba site? After trying above, i would try installing touchpad drivers again.

If that does not work, then i would backup your data or a full image and try the Registry backup.

Do you have an extra laptop hard drive? If you do, then I would try to install os/full install on it. A last resort to reformat and install os.

Thanks for the advice TechToyz. I've tried reinstalling the drivers from the website, but out of what you said, that's it.

It's good to see that I AM missing my touchpad there where it shows the mouse. I will try rebooting in safe mode next, and then remove the battery. I'll let you know how it goes either tonight (after work), or in the morning.

Thanks,

Fixed!

Thanks for the help! I had rebooted after reinstalling the driver for the touchpad, but it didn't work before. So I shut it down, took it to work, never used it there, brought it back home, booted it up, and the touchpad works perfectly!

So if anybody else has this problem, be sure to not just reboot, but shut down completely and then boot up.

Thanks again for the help!

That's what kind of what happened to me. I tried installing driver and rebooting. No go, but, then i did turn it off and then on and still zip. Then a couple of days later, i turn it on and it boots up with touchpad working. Glad to hear everything working.

So... All I have to do is bring my laptop to your work, Ransomed1, and then bring it home again . Where do you work?

I work at a different place than before. That other place had some sort of computer-fixing power to it.

However, I haven't had any major touchpad problems with my 8100 in over a year. What I found was that you need to try to only let one finder touch it at a time. If you confuse it by giving too many inputs at once, it will sometimes freak out. Don't ask me why, I don't know what the deal is.

Still using my TM8100 and loving it. Just gotta hold out until the DirectX10 cards are available at a decent price ($2000) in a notebook pc format and I'll be upgrading to a new notebook. For now it's all about Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts

Ok, enough of my off-topic rant.
