There will be a market for both indefinately I think. Why?

There will always be people who don't need portability and just want a computer to sit in their room forever. Desktops are ideal here because they are usually cheaper. Also you can customize and build your own desktop tons easier than building a laptop.

Desktops will be long gone soon, perhaps laptops will in the next 40 years. I can see all of our computing needs being handled through a pair of glasses.

I think desktops will always be around. While notebooks are portable and convenient and even great gaming machines now, desktops will always have the new technology in them first. Laptops lag behind but not by much. Since I gotm y i600m I don't use my D8300 as much but I still use it for 98% of my gaming. If I had a 9300 or XPS 2 maybe that would change who knows.

How can anyone say desktops will always be around?

15 years from now I GUARANTEE we will be wondering how we ever got by with those huge hunks of metal. Technology is improving so quickly that no one will want a desktop when you can walk down the street while surfing at the same time.

A lot of posters are saying that desktops are cheaper than laptops, but I don't see that remaining to be true. As technology continues to evolve, laptops have become more inexpensive over the years.

agreed..and with wireless technology getting better and better..laptops are going to be more practical and functional than ever..more than what they are, that is

I believe the desktop will disappear too...after all, PCs have been shrinking for such a long time. It won't be long until the standard formfactor of PCs become the size of laptops. OF course eventually the standard formfactor will be the size of pocket PCs.

I don't think that desktops will completely dissapear. After all, there are still people who will want to use 30 in widescreen monitors . Try fitting that in a notebook . However, I think that laptops will start taking a lot of the PC market, and PC's will just be reserved for people who want the maximum amount of power and screen space.

I do agree with you, but given that high end laptops can do most of what DT's can do, why would those people still not get a 30 in WS monitor and just hook it up to their laptop.

Nah they won't go away until you can build a laptop yourself with non-proprietary parts and a standardized form factor [will never happen].

I can imagine laptops the size of a PDA, but with a roll out screen and keyboard.

Thanks to OLED technology, it is possible to manufacture a screen that you can roll up like a piece of thin plastic, right now it's still in the developing stages, and only being used commercially in certain cell phones.

So I can imagine having the processing/hardware in something the size of a pda, and the screen can unfold and you can stick it on a wall, or the surface of your desk, and unroll a touch sensitive keyboard, that also looks like a piece of plastic. Probably will stick to the normal mouse for input for the near future, as it is the most efficient and accurate way for cursor control IMO.

But yeah, look up OLED technology, imagine having a newspaper that is a big led screen you can roll up and just download the news to it everyday for a couple cents. (edit: if you remember in "minority report" on the subway, you can see some people reading a newspaper with moving graphics etc, that's basically what OLED promises to do in the future.)

THE FUTURE IS NOW *makes weird scifi noises*

2nd EDIT: look at http://www.oled-info.com/ oh yeah, they also use less power, are lighter, brighter, better contrast and USE LESS POWER!!
