High Pitch Sounds

I have a D800 and for some reason there is a high pitch (comes and goes) sound comming from the top left of my laptop. This is where my vent is, fan, and whatever else may be there. Its not dreadfully loud, but it can be very annoying when I dont have music on. What could be causing this?

This is a common question on the forum.
Let me run down some couses and "solutions"

- Are you on AC, the battery is charging (the battery led is either solid green or flashing every 8 seconds or so). If so, the sound you're hearing is the charger and it'll stop once the battery is fully charged (battery led stops flashing)

- If it's more of a buzzing, it coule be the cpu in a low performance mode, try disabling power management on at least one of the usb root hubs or simply put the cpu to a higher frequency

- If it's more of a very faint beeping, it again could be the cpu in a high performance mode. This happens when the cpu is at the highest frequency (and usually at 100% load)

- Since you're saying it's coming from the fans, it could be a loose bearing. Lift the keyboard up and see.

It could also be your Infrared port. Whenever mine is activated, it makes a quiet, but high-pitched squeal/squeak sound every few seconds. Since I don't use infrared, I just turned it off in the BIOS and the sound is gone.

- It does it when I have it unplugged

- How do i do this? (power management, lower cpu frequency)

- I have I8kfanGUI and even at 1% and it still buzzes

- I did take apart the fan, just to blow out some dust, ill check the bearing...

To further describe the sound, its not a BUZZZ, its more of a almost to high pitch sound to even hear, but at the same sound, its not LOUD, but you can hear it if you listen for it (which I cannot help after noticing it).

Go to the device manager, extend USB Controllers, click on one of the USB Root Hubs, click on Power Management tab and uncheck the check box. Or plug in something to the usb port

My 600m makes the same sound sometimes. Don't know why. I think it might be the charging thing but not sure. Mine does it mostly when it's plugged in.

I have this same noise, but its coming from my hard drive area on 600m (lower left). At first I though my HD was dying, but it first started about 5 months ago and it comes and goes. I'm pretty sure its coming from the HD because the sound goes away when the HD is working (like defragging).
