New 9300 Just Arrived. Oh, Baby Baby...

What a nice machine.

Screen is a thing of beauty. Don't let anyone talk you out of it.

1. How do you tell _what_ screen you have?

2. How many of y'all reformat and load from scratch, right off the bat?

3. Mine came with HOME, but I would like to (maybe) load an older version of XP PRO. Any reason to "not" do that?

4. I assumed the computer had TWO slots for batteries. Only has one. What's the sense of the extra battery if you can't self-charge it? Anyone?

Wow. Wow. Wow. A very nice computer. Can't wait to fire up some Photoshop, and of course, HL2!

Thanks for any feedback...

1 and 2 are explained VERY WELL in this link: http://notebookforums.com/search.php?

3. no problem
4. This is so you can swap batt's out when you run out of one.

also, I agree, a VERY nice comp

I don't understand why people like to reformat or run XP Pro on their lappy. Just remove the bloatware. That way you don't have to worry about getting the right drivers installed, reinstalling your MPEG codecs, etc. And the only reason you need XP Pro is if you're connecting to an NT domain. XP Home has a smaller footprint, and it's generally a better fit for laptops.

I'm noticing that a lot of typeface during web browsing looks _real_ pixelated. I change to "clear type" in properties, but it changed nothing.

Any ideas on this?

Yea, but there's no way to charge it other than in the computer, no? How long will a fully charged battery last, outside of the computer? TIA,

There are reasons to use XP Pro.
Running SQL Server (for specific applications), IIS, development applications, etc..Some will not run or install on XP Home edition. XP Pro accounts are different as well.

But unless your really all that jazz, XP Home is great and doesn't load as many services on startup.

If you run XP Pro, turn off the services you don't use.

change your dpi from 120 to 96 should solve your problem.

Yes, but if I use a previous version disk of Win XP Pro, and then update service packs, etc. what else do I need in the way of Dell stuff? All that comes with the computer, as I can see are a few disks with the DVD software. No "resource" CD, or anything like that.

If I decide to stay with the HOME version, is everything I need on that?

Taken from DELL Notebook FAQ ...enter this registry "fix" manually. Click Start and Select Run. Now type "regedit" (without the quotes) and press OK. Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main by expanding the folders you see on the right. Now once you are there Click Edit-> New-> DWORD Value, which will now appear in that directory. Name it "UseHR" (without quotes) and double click it. Change the value to 0.

The next time you load up IE it should be back in 96DPI mode and the problem resolved.

But, let's say you just want to install it "your way," with a clean install. If you use the included CD, (what I don't understand) is "where _is_all the bloatware? Is the supplied disk just Win XP Home, without the junk? Or is the "junk stuff" an option as you are doing a clean install?

How about all the drivers, etc?

As I said before, in my package is just a paper disk, the Sonic, and DVD install disks. Nothing else...

If the link works it's a direct link to all of Dell's downloads for the 9300. Dell's site rocks.

I agree with Dellbert. I have owned five laptops. I never formated any of them. I just removed whatever I did not need. The only time I have ever formated a disk was when I built a desktop.

I'm starting to agree with you.

Normally I hose the hard-drive, first thing.

But, this seems to be running so smoothly, I may just load it up and go.

I just like to make sure I have "got rid of" everything. Something I guess you can never guarantee without a clean install. But, like I say, this little lappy seems to be purring along. No need to reformat at this point.

I went to A/R Programs, and got rid of just about everything I "know" I don't need. There are are a few things in there that I'm not sure of, so I just won't mess with them.

Any advice for doing some additonal cleaning up?

run some kind of registry cleaner. I don't know much about getting extra stuff out of your registry so I just run a program.
the other thing is dell makes your hd 1 partiton, it makes for slower access times and wastes space
post #20 of 21
I deleted the extra partitions with Partition Magic. I had it because I patitioned an external drive.
