Z71V vs. i9300

Z71V vs. i9300
I'm debating between these two machines, and am wondering what the advantage of the Asus is. It's got a few minor advantages, but I'm having a hard time finding a reason to pay more for a machine with a smaller screen and a slower GPU. The only real, concrete advantage I can see to the ASUS is the dual-battery mode, but my configuration of the Dell includes both batteries -- and hibernating to change them out isn't that big of a deal.

I want:

CD writer
Gaming performance
HD >60gb
High resolution display
Good battery life
Cheapish

The 9300 I've specced out comes to $1300 with the coupon (I'll have to shell out another $125 for memory), and has:

1.6 P-M
256 ram
80gb disk
6800
WUXGA
6 and 9-cell batteries
CD writer

Asus (comes to $1521 with student discount from ISTNC -- do they have free shipping?)
1.6 P-M
1gb ram
80gb disk
6600
WSXGA
6 and 9 cell batteries (dual-battery option)
CD writer

So, it's looking like this:

i9300:

+ More powerful GPU
+ Bigger screen/better resolution
+ Cheaper
- It's a Dell
- Lower battery life
- Use of both batteries requires hibernating the computer to switch

Asus:
+ More portable
+ Can order the lower-FSB processor and pinmod it
+ ALS
+ Probably better construction
+ Buying from small business rather than Dell
- More expensive
- Worse screen, lower resolution, weaker GPU

I really want a reason to get the Asus, but the pure power of the Dell and the lower price are hard to argue with. What am I missing?

Where's the cheapest place to get an Z71V?
Are the onboard speakers of the Z71V better than those on the Dell?
Can the GPU of the Asus be upgraded later?

Depends on your needs. I got the Asus because I couldn't afford the unreliability associated with Dells and because I needed something more portable than a 17" system. If neither of those are a huge issue then I'd say go with the Dell (get the extended warranty though).

the 6800 on the dell is attractive...
if it will sit at home anywayz.. (battery/portability don't matter) there is no reason not to get the dell + extra warranty

It's going to both sit at home and ride around with me.

I imagine this computer will both play Half-Life and come with me to classes and the laboratory.

Edit: How is the build quality on the i9300?

i don't know how bad dell's are..
i mean.. they have brand name components.. their screen on i9300 should be fine.. good video card..
even tho i think they don't look good at all.. if you treat it right.. i don't think any laptop is that unreliable unless it comes with deflected hardware which in that case. you should be able to return...

the only problem i have on the i9300 is that.. it is simply too big.. when i purchased my first laptop.. i was only considering the ones with a 14.1inch/15.4inch widescreen

i feel the z71v has a pretty nice size to it.. but i think i do prefer the 14.1.. and the x600 would probally do ... so i would never consider the i9300 soley b/c of this reason

Build quality is pretty good for a dell its a hell of a lot better than the 9100s and XPS's they used to sell. If your gonna game and its not going anywhere most of the time then I cant see why you wouldnt want the 9300? make sure you get the At home warrenty this way a local tech will just drop by and fix whatever issue your having with the laptop which is pretty good considering no one wants ot send theres anywhere to get it fixed.

1Cent: I've read a bunch about the sound system on the Z71V. How good, really, is it?

Get the Dell 9300 use the $750 coupon or even wait for the bettter ones like 30 or 33% off. Than you can use student discount plus if you order from fatwallet.com than that's 9% off already.

Does the 9% from fatwallet stack with the other dell coupons?

Best sound system I've ever seen on a laptop.

That's actually a big factor in my decision. I'm a musician/music teacher, and it'd be nice to be able to play things on my lappy for my students without external speakers and without it sounding like shite.

I just bought the Z71V

The last two notebooks on my list were the i9300 and the Z71V.

When it finally came down to it, I decided I can't lug the i9300 around when I travel, and I certainly travel with my laptop on a pretty regular basis. For travelers, it's a BRICK. Nothing against the i9300, but it just isn't made for frequent travel. In fact, the 6800 was the only thing that even made it a hard decision for me.

I haven't received my Z71V yet, though I'm sure I'll be happy. No doubt Desert Combat plays well on it. Now if Battlefield2 doesn't play well on it, then I'll be a pretty unhappy camper.

I owned an i8100 for a while and I've seen the new inspirons-- i'd say build quality has definitely gotten better for them, if that helps you at all.

Build quality is something I'm concerned about. I own an Arima/eMachines model whose rubber feet fell off, causing it to fall off a table onto carpet when I tripped over a power cable, causing one of the hinges to break (because of a bad design) and a latent manufacturing defect in the cable feeding the backlight inverter to cause the screen to flicker.

Another friend of mine ran over his powerbook with a car, and it still ran.

I'm not planning on running over a machine with a car, but I'd like it to be tough.

Another question for you i9300/Z71V owners:

Do either of these machines have a way to turn off the status LED's when the system's on, to make viewing more pleasant in a dark room?
I know for my z71v i like the blue leds.
Can't you pin mod the 9300 too?

If you're in a darkened room with the screen dim, the LED's can be almost as bright as the screen ... which is very distracting.
You could just take a needle and poke out the LEDs

Nah, they're good sometimes -- like when I want to know if my HDD's thrashing, etc.

My current system can toggle them with Fn + F1. Do either of these systems have a similar toggle?
Quick glance at the keyboard doesnt reveal a toggle...
The only status light thats always on for the 9300 that isnt optional is the power on light which is barely noticible. The bluetooth and wifi lights can be toggled off.
