Benchmarks smenchmarks, it's the OS dude!!!

Well, I've seen the benchmark thingies again, somebody wants to say some P4 3.2 laptop is faster than my 1.67 Apple powerbook. Well, seriously now, for me that P4 might as well double as a vacuum cleaner, especially if its a Dell. Come on, don't we Mac users just miss the adware, malware, scumware, (and all them script kiddies out there who just love Microsoft)?
In all seriousness, no way can you say XP is as stable as Panther or Tiger, especially after Service Pack 2. I say this after cleaning up the virus messes in my PC and much ruined work. I think the stability alone of osx warrants the Mac. The other thing is that Mac laptops are better made than most PC's. Only PC advantages, yes, they are a little bit cheaper, have a little more software depending on what you do with them and tech support can be better (yes, Apple tech support does suck), but, you cannot have everything and the Mac does win out.

thanks for the opinion. i'm sure some will agree and others will flame you for it.

Well considering this is the Apple section i will still post my 2 cents, First of I think Apples are very cool, They have a great community, and as far as i know good for multimedia editing. But the main problem is that you posted how there is so malicious software on Microsoft, and that it is highly unstable, I have never once had any really malicious software in my computer AdAware easily cleans out the minmal amount of spyware i recieve. and my computer has never had stabability problems, this is not to say they dont exist but they have never happened to me, at my school are all macs and they constantly have problems so what i am trying to say is it is not as much the OS either way but the way you mantain it.

Half of the comps my school have are macs, but they have problems doing anything because they only have 32 megs of ram. I mean 32? Its insane, running OSX (even if it is 10.0)

although macs have their benefits, your comparison is not fair. you flame the whole PC group of hardware for the shortcommings of windows xp. i've used xp for about 1/2 year on my laptop, and i've used win2k on my desktop for 3 years and stability issues were minimal. ever since firefox 0.8, adware was a non-issue. with IE, after a week of use i'd get 40 results with lavasoft Ad-Aware, with firefox, always less than 5, mostly 1 or 2, if any. I had a few crashes, but i had even more crashes on the macs in school with my total time of use on the macs was not even a 1/3 of what i used the windows powered pcs at home. os x is a nice os, but it is not "godly", but neither is xp, both have their strenghts and weaknesses.

and as i originally stated, your flaming of PC hardware due to windows shortcommings is unjust. Don't forget there are other OSes available fro the hardware "built for Windows". BSD, Linux, Unix, Solaris, OS/2, SkyOS....just to name a few.

this can lead us to conlude that: if you hate windows, but love your hardware, you don't need to sell it and buy a mac. you can keep your old hardware and just install an alternative os.

Ditto. WinXP is pretty stable, certainly better than 2K and especially 9x (and don't get me started on ME...) - I have no idea why you suggested OS/2 as something to install, how about you just go for MS-Dos or win 3.1 (prolly no virus's!)

I think people who use macs in school are prone to judge them on that, generally PC comps and Macs as a whole are underspeced and really the admins would be better paying a bit more for a bit more ram and then not replacing them as often.

yeh, oddly enough the best computers we had at school were in the design labs, and yep, they were Macs. meanwhile the PC lab was still running 233mhz pentium II's, which for email and word processing isn't a problem. that said i've had my share of lockups on both.

let's not forget how testy various anti-virus programs can be on windows systems. for instance, if u've never had problems w/ installing norton antivirus/IS on a fresh install of windows, u haven't been working w/ PCs long enough. once u get a stable install of the OS and the various apps to help keep it secure, yes, then it becomes a reasonably stable OS.

I have the unique perspective of using WinXP for over a year, so I'll answer this question. The Wintel world is like a Olds 442 while the Mac/PPC is like a modern Lexus. On a single task, the Olds 442 (PC) will be superior, but its level of refinement has much to be desired. The Lexus (Mac) is amazing as an everyday driver due to its high level of refinement. However its down a bit on power and that refinement doesn't come cheap. If you're willing to live with the lack of refinement and deal with the high maintance requirements in exhange for raw power, go with the PC. If you want a hastle free computer and don't need the extra power, go with the Mac. Me, I keep a PC tower for the raw power tasks, but my 900 12" iBook G3 is used for all the normal everyday tasks.
