Fans and Cooling, 8890 vs 5680

Anyone notice the different fan vent openings in the 5680 and 8890? I did some scale measurements of both machines while drawing up lapdesk designs, and it seems the fans are the following sizes:

5680:
Two 2.5" diameter grilles (4.9 sq inches each)
One 1.75" diameter grille (2.4 sq inches)
Total: 12.2 sqaure inches

8890:
Two 2" diameter grilles (3.14 sq inches each)
Total: 6.3 square inches

That's twice as much fan area on the 5680, for fewer internal components. So it would seem the 5680 might be better cooled (for whatever that's worth) than the 8890.

Or the 8890 is more efficient .

You will probably find the difference has more to do with the packing density. The 8890 has more room to play with, whereas the 5680 is more tightly packed.

The 8890 might also have fans with a higher CFM rate.

Why didn't I think of that?

For identical fan designs, CFM is vaguely proportional to square area. So if the 8890 has higher CFM fans, they're probably louder and draw more power, since fan designs trade off those aspects for airflow efficiency.

are u being sarcastic aussie? I thought thats what you mean when you said they are more efficient, meaning they blow more air. Anyway, my guess would be hat they have a higher rpm and therefore cfm on the 8890.

Yes, my poor attempt at humour

Just curious, can you add more fans in the laptop, say in extra slots or sumthin.

Actually, the 8890 has 3 fans too. But, one of them is under the KB, on the graphics card...

The 5680 also has three fans. the small one is for the graphics, and the two larger ones are for the CPU. On the 8890, the exposed fans are for the CPU...
