hmm, that article is almost 2 years old. i find it strange that if this thing is as bad as it sounds, i havent heard anything about it yet. i suppose some of it might be true, but i think software companies deleting files remotely off your computer or preventing file compatibility is somewhat far-fetched, at least as of yet.

Yes, you will get Longhorn. For one thing you eventually won't have a choice, just like you can't run Windows 98 anymore since support for it has been totally cut off.

Besids, Microsoft has said over and over, it will be optional if you use this stuff, but some programs or applications may require it to run.

This doesn't mean you can't run it anymore...yes I am speaking from unfortunate experience. Actually we just have it on a few old PC's for special needs students.

Just to ask, how does anyone feel about about the whole .NET business ? There is something I truly don't like about Visual Studio making pseudo code that needs to be run thru the .NET interpreter.

ROFL! Pseudocode. Goober.

Visual Studio still can make normal win32 programs. If it bothers you that much, learn C++ and make MFC/ATL programs. Even Whidby still supports this.

unfortunately the linux option might not be available for too much longer. i read an article the other day that quoted bill gates saying microsoft was interested in buying RedHat...
so? thats one distro and even then he is bound by the gnu which means its a waste of time for him.

I am guessing Microsoft would like to see how much further Linux programmers have progressed beyond the original rip offs of UNIX. I guess their PhD's are getting kind of old. Time to recruit the recently graduated.
