512MB or 1024MB stick of RAM (768 vs 1280)

Alright, heres the deal. I ordered my 9300 with 256mb of RAM and my intentions were to buy that 1gb trancend stick. But now, I'm also pondering over whether i even need that much.

512MB costs around 70 bucks, and will give me a total of 768MB RAM.
1024MB costs about 130 bucks, and will give me a total of 1280MB RAM.

With that said, do you guys think that there will really be that much of a difference in having 768 mb as opposed to 1280? Currently on my desktop i have 512 PC800 RDRAM (and i can play games and stuff pretty well), so either way it will be a step up on my laptop.

I'll mainly be using my comp for internet, chat, games (diablo II, WoW, halo, etc, and i got the 6800go). Also i'll use it for photoshop ocasionally. I often keep like 8+ things open (like right now). So what do you guys think, should i spend an extra 60 bucks to get 1280, or will I be fine with 768?

Also, will this work with my 9300? Im pretty sure it will, but i'm not 100% sure.

I say go for the 1 gig stick, and in a year or so when there are more demanding applications, you can just replace that 256, with another 1 gig, and you'll have 2 gigs

I wish i did what you guys did and start off with 256mb. I got the 512mb because it was the same as market price. Now i want to either up it with a 512 stick or the 1gb stick. Leaving me an extra stick

Get the gig. You can (almost) never have too much memory, and then you won't be kicking yourself when it comes time to put another gig stick in there.

Decided to go with the gig after all, costs $128.18 total. Hopefully i dont get bad memory. Now all i have to worry about is paying back my parents...even though they keep saying "u should focus on ur education, dont worry about getting a job, blablabal"...but yea...feels weird to have them spend $1500+ for a laptop and then 120 more for memory...and then just not paying them back...

so...anyone know any good summer jobs that have good pay and hire 16 year olds?

I9300 with 768 MB of RAM

I also went with the 256 MB RAM module. I added a 512 MB RAM module today (total = 768 MB of RAM). I havn't tested the PC with this additional RAM, yet. However, I can verify that the PC boots up quicker (i.e, I have McAffe firewall and it use to take forever to get to the log on screen for this application. With the additional memory (3 X as much) it boots uo much faster. Therefore, I highly recomend that you at leas add 512 MB of RAM.

My I9300 has a 2G processor & NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 video card.

When money isn't so tight, I may replace the 256MB module with a 1024 MB Ram module for a total of 1,536 MB of RAM.

Thanks,

Paul

I got my 9300 with 512 (2 x 256) RAM. I just got a 1GB transcend stick and now have 1.25GB RAM in my 9300. There is a HUGE difference between 512 and 1.25, so going from 256MB, you will notice a really big difference in performance. For $120 or so per GB, you can't go wrong.

hey i'm going to be ordering a i9300 soon and going about the ram this way seems much cheaper than upgrading through dell, but i have a couple of questions. i now plan on ordering it with the 256 mb and ordering a 1024 mb kensington or transcend stick but will dual channel still work although the ram sizes are different? and my second question is, how easy is it to install ram into a notebook? i've never really worked with laptops before just desktop computers but i would assume that is shouldn't been too much harder than installing it inside a tower, am i right or is really harder than i make it to be? thansk for any help

No the dual channel won't work with 2 different sizes but there is very little difference anyway. The memory is already running at 533, same as the fsb.

^^ohh ok, thanks for clearing it up

Oh, and your other question. It's very easy. Under the middle back panel is the 2 ram slots. Take out 2 screws to get the panel off, flip back a couple spring holder thingys, and swap out the ram.

^^^ahh, thanks once again, haha i forgot all about my second question. but thanks, that clears up all the questions i have, i think
