9300 Overclocking

Laptop powerusers come to the fore!
Myself being an overclocker by nature when it comes to desktop machines, I was wondering about the prospects of overclocking the new laptop I got - Dell inspiron 9300. Now I have seen very few threads on overclocking the laptop CPU or FSB. Is it feasible? Worth it? Reasonable performance gain? Or is this just taboo? I dont want any external cooling solutions or anything like that to achieve this.

Also, whats the magic formula for getting 4000+ 3dmark05 scores using the 9300 and Geforce 6800 Go? I've seen posters who said they achieved that. I tried the Omega 66.93 nvidia drivers (which I believe are the latest he's got) and only managed 2853. 1000 pts increase wanted ^__^

Would the latest laptopvideo2go drivers make a big difference?

oh boy,
the final two tests in 3dmark05 chug at 1 frame per sec!!!!! PLUS its chunky and pixelly. what kind of joke is this.

i've got speedstep turned on, im guessing its meant to save power when i'm not plugged in - but then why does the properties on my Computer say its running at 798mhz all the time??? or does the speed go up to 2ghz by itself when running intensive applications such as 3dmark05? does turning speedstep off keep it at 2ghz permanently?

1.get the 76.50 drivers, install regulary (open... install, no uninstall of old drivers) you will get like 3500 3dmark05 scores with that.

2.Then download NVtweak (google it ) and enable all.

3.Go to nview on the ge force 6800 and detect optimal frequencies. (should be about 300-380 and 700-750)

4.Apply at startup and then apply.

5.Then ur done and ull get a similar to score to mine below, or maybe even more.

Thanks a bunch guerilla will try it as soon as i get home. laptopvideo2go ROCKS!

I can't get the 76.50 drivers to install. When I run the setup it says that there are no better drivers to install, and when I try and manually do it from Device Manager it gives me a similar error saying there is not a better driver to install. Currently getting 3048 on 3DMark05.

Believe me it's feasible, I'm currently at 4915 in 3DMark05. Just remember; OC'ing the core will get you much better results then the memory.

Reaver you serious??

Reaver, did you use any external cooling solutions to get taht kind of a score???

Uninstall the old driver from Add/Remove if you can, than reboot the system. Install the new driver that you downloaded. Go back into Display Properties and reset the native resolution again if needed. Don't forget to turn on the ClearType...

No, just the internal fans @ 4600RPM, hasn't gone above 70C yet at those settings. I have put AS5 on my GPU, thats all. Putting it in your lap when you're running the GPU high helps a lot.

As far as I know, there isn't a way to overclock the CPU/FSB. You can however purchase a PentiumM Dothan 400MHz FSB and trick the processor to run at 533Mhz FSB and get some pretty kick butt results. If you buy a 1.6Ghz 400 MHz and run it at 533, then you get a 2.128 GHz CPU!

Also, I get about ~4300 on a mild overclock in 3dMark05.

How do you control the speed of the fans? With i8kfangui, the best they seem to do is around 3800rpm when set on high.

So far my best 3dmark05 is a little above 4100 with the stock drivers and the Dell installed crap running. That's using the 'detect optimal' for overclocking which will likely be different for others.

When your GPU and CPU are running hot press Fn+r, then change the Fan2 PWM to 40. Egon Pax, I believe he was refering to overclocking the GPU.

People are achieving overclocks with the cpu by putting a 400mhz version of the Pentium M in the system and shorting a pin to make the mo-board think it's a 533. A 1.8 will run at 2.4. Some are stable, some are not. Noone's tried it with a 2.0 yet, that I know of, but that would be pretty cool.

Sorry, yes I was referring to both CPU and GPU.
I've installed the latest 76.50 with the modded INF and also disabled a ton of services, even my wireless, bluetooth and ethernet cards... pretty much set it on max performance, and got 4066 running 350/720. I don't understand why mine failed on 360/725 though... is it related to the RPM of the fan running?
So if I increase my fan's RPM I can get higher 3dmarks?

I'd want to have a good balance between better graphics card performance and fan noise though, so I might just pass on increasing the fan RPM. Whats the default normal fan or fans RPM in the i9300 anyway? Reaver mentioned 4600rpm but whats the original config?

Here is a link for overclocking speedstep it's a small program i've been useing it for two months now with no problems will let you set CPU speeds & Voltage have fun

Hi there, ive been trying to get the 76.50 drivers to install on my 9300 (6800 gfx version) but each time i try to install it i get a message saying:

"The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."

Any ideas guys?.... I've also tried to install the driver by updating it in device manager but no joy.

Cheers.
