LCD shuts down on Area-51m 766

Sometimes when I turn on my 766 the LCD shuts off after 5 minutes or so. I have to hold the power button until the system shuts down, then I restart it and the LCD stays on. The LCD only shuts down when the laptop is plugged in, never happens on battery power. Anyone else had this problem and know of a fix?

Is the computer still functional, meaning is it just the LCD that shuts down?

There are 2 different problems that I had with mine. The first problem was right after I got the machine there were some weird things happening only when it was running on battery. I called tech support and they had me boot the system and enter the BIOS screen and leave it there on battery so the battery would fully drain. Then I plugged in the system and let the battery fully charge. Since then I had no problems when running it on battery.

The second issue that I had with the LCD was that my lid switch was broken. Since I never use the hibernate feature and because I didn't want to send the system back for repair I just "broke" the switch so that it is always on. It has been working like that for a year now. Basically I jammed a paperclip in the switch and moved it around until it worked. I would not do that if you are under warranty.
