I've been using the computer for a day now. I've gotten used to the screen. It's got little backlight leakage, too, but now after getting to real work these are really minor things, you don't actually care about. The main thing is that the computer is really fast and that the screen has good colors, no dead pixels, and no ghosting. The processor feels fast and furious, as does the graphics card. It speeds up my working a lot, compared to the my desktop I was working with (Athlon 1800+, ATI 9550, 1 GB). I can't compare it to my brother's nw8000 at the moment, but my feeling is that the greatest difference is that the graphics system, which is 2.5 x faster on nw8240. However, the fans of nw8000 are sometimes off, which they don't do on nw8240. The keyboard is nice, very good to type on. So far I'm growing to like the computer more and more. I have yet to run a battery life test.

And btw, heat is no problem. The casing doesn't heat much at all, but air around the keyboard might get little warm after 3D work, but nothing serious. It appears to have very good heat management. Nothing like Acer TM 800, that I had a year ago, which you could use to burn your left palm.

I'll try to have something up tomorrow.

I spent the night reformatting and reinstalling and it was a breeze. The recovery disk the comes with the machine is a full Windows XP Professional SP2 install disk and the process was no different than a desktop machine. Now I have three partitions, one for OS and swap file, one for apps and the last for data.

I want to echo Tommi's comments on the screen. After spending a couple days with the machine, I'm growing to appreciate the quality of the screen. After tweaking the brightness/contrast/gamma with the ATI drivers the color is outstanding. The screen is fast (no cursor trails) and light leakage is only bothersome with a completely blank, black screen in a dimly lit room.

I ran World of Warcraft and it runs just as fast as my desktop with a Geforce 6600 GT. I'm installing Photoshop CS and Softimage XSI 4.2 tomorrow, so I'll finally see what this rig can do with professional apps.

Oh yeah, heat is NOT a problem with this notebook. The fan runs often, especially when running on AC power, but it's not noisy and it seems to cool admirably.

Really liking this notebook.

Anyone can confirm does nw8240 support USB flash disc boot function in BIOS?

Hi there,

I´ve got a demoUnit of the nw8240 here. I´m extremly happy with the performance and everything. But I think I have heat problems. If you have your processor running for about 15 mins on 100% (i.e rendering) the processor temperature goes up to 90 degrees celcius. Is that still allright? Also the casing just below the alt and windows key becomes pretty warm. What do you guys think?

It sounds like a little heat problem. I think mine goes up to only 80 or so. You can reduce the heat problem somewhat by undervolting the processor.
