OT: your thoughts on PS3 and XB360

Since most ppl here are gamers, what do you think of the next-gen consoles? The specs, esp for PS3, are pretty impressive.

XBOX360 impresses me more than the PS3. The cell technology hasn't been used before, and IBM claims these awesome benchmarks which I don't believe are very "real world". You cannot go wrong with either machine but I will definitely be picking up an XBOX360 under my Microsoft Employee discount.

PS3 and Revolution is keeping my interest much more than the Xbox360 at the moment.

From a hardware perspective, the PS3 beats the Xbox360 by a good margin. From a launch perspective, thus far, the PS3 has blown away the Xbox360.....The 2 hour press conference last night in LA alone was enough to make everybody realize the PS3 had easily won the hardware battle, and that microsoft really needs to get all the key developers on board to win the war with GAMES (duh!).

I'm flying out to E3 tomorrow so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out on the showroom floor. As long as MSFT has games people want, they can compete with PS3 (which already has announced very high profile games, GT5, GTA being two of them).

From a tech demo perspective, both systems will excite developers. The new nitnendo sounds like its going to be in a niche by itself and wont have to compete with the big boys sony/msft as much, which, IMO, is almost how it is now.

I currently have a PS2. I was seriously thinking of getting XB360 for Live but the PS3 spex are powerful. PS2 online was a disaster...its odd that Sony did not talk about PS3 online during their press conference. M$ is being pretty innovative with Live, altho they need to stop the annual fee. I may wait for 3rd party developer feedback before I make my decision as to which console to buy since both M$ and Sony will exaggerrate the capabilities of their console.

i definitely won't get ps3/xbox 360 until holiday 2006....i wait for the price drop and the second wave of games

both consoles look absoultely astonishing. they are leaps and bounds past their predecessors.

I read that the GTA announcement was false. R* has not announced GTA for PS3 launch. I wish I could go to E3. I read that some of the PS3 games were pre-rendered so the grafix may be a little misleading. I plan to watch the press conferences (M$ and Sony) today. XB360 has strong 3rd party support, even Square is supporting it. I think the difference in the next-gen consoles won't be in 3rd party support, but 1st party games. The majority of 3rd parties will support both PS3 and XB360. Thus it will be the 1st party games that will distinguish the systems. And one could argue that M$ has just as strong 1st party (if not stronger) than Sony.

What it comes down to is online playability as well as a virtual world. Microsoft is focused on online capability because they know how huge it is. Look at EverQuest, WoW, FFXI, etc. MS has embraced this fact while Sony is still pussy footing around in the online world. As someone said already, PS2 online was a disaster. Microsoft knows what to do and has the money to do it. The hardware specs are pretty similar in a real world environment. With Square making games for XBOX now, Sony is screwed.

The cell technology going into the PS3 has a lot of speculation and artificial benchmarks. Do not trust the impressive information that Sony is spewing at their uninformed audience.

I'm hoping the xbox360 will come out on top, specifically because I've heard that the PS3 CELL Processor is notoriously difficult to program. But either way both of these systems are virtual supercomputers. I honestly don't see how any game will need even 1/3 of the power these systems output, especially considering how low the resolution of even HDTVs is.

Famous quote: No-one will ever need more than 640K... Mangled the quote, but you get the idea)

Software will always expand to use all the capability of a given piece of hardware. Whether through code-bloat, or through actual improvements, it will always happen.

Square was also making Gamecube games... I have a feeling that most of there support is still going to be with Sony.

microsoft has to have more realistic spec cause they went with off the shel mac parts instead of pc ones.

sony is once again hyping their thing to be the best thing since sliced bread. too bad microsoft isn't sega. anyone remember how the emotion engine was supposed to render toy story like graphics.

nonetheless, if the killzone demo was in game footage im buying a ps3 and xbox. if killzone was fake ill have to wait. in any case i will definately be buying the xbox 360

I do not think either will be able to provide the 1600x1200 gaming experience a high end PC can now.

Don't worry, they'll do much more.

ill get a ps3....

I was looking at that chart that Sony provided regarding Cpu performance and it seemed off to me that the cell cpu they tout so much can only get 2x the performance of xbox 360 (non real world of course) I believe nintendo when they say there system realistically is only 2-3 times better than the gamecube not to mention how incredibly small and sexy the system is.

I got an XBox when it was young on the market, and I definitely don't regret it. Personally, I don't like playstation controllers at all, so I've never considered a playstation. I'm also more of a Halo kind of guy...playstation didn't offer that kind of fun.

So anyways, now that a new XBox is coming out as well as a playstation 3, I plan on getting neither. In terms of power, they both seem inconceivably fast-the XBox shows that even a dedicated 700mhz celeron and 64mb of shared RAM coupled with something about equal to a geforce 4 can keep up with todays graphics. Given how fast XBox is and how much better the specs of these two new consoles are, I can't even imagine what kind of performance they are capable of.

Anyone know if XBox 360 is backwards compatable with Xbox 1 games?

Doesn't matter.
I bought all "3" Consoles before..(Xbox, PS2, GameCube)
I'll buy them again starting this Xmas.....

But I must admit...it's more for my sons...I'm more of a PC gamer.

you decide why?

CPU
X-box360 next - 2(maybe 6 according to some unofficial rumors) 64-bit processors at 3 Ghz TOTAL(btw these are actually modified MACINTOSH PowerPC Processors)
PS3 - 4 128[or possibly 256(still undecided)]-bit processors at 3.2Ghz EACH

Just doing the math on that one - if operating at the same clock speed a 64-bit processor will be about half as fast as a 128, but the x-box next cpu is 2-1.5GHz Processors. Even if PS3 ONLY has 128-bit processors at 3.2Ghz EACH - x-box next will need about 22 of their processors to compete(not 2) and if they are 256-bit . . . try about 90.

Memory~
X-box Next - most likely a modified form of DDR2 operating at an effective clock speed of 800-1000Mhz
PS3 - Rambus "Yellowstone" and "Redwood" Modules operating at at least 3200Mhz

Microsoft will need 3-4 times as much memory ot compete

GPU~
X-box Next -An ATI Chip Very likely at the R500/R550 level
PS3 - NVidia custom processor approx. 2-3 times faster than GeForce 6800 OC

From What we've seen from ATI and NVidia recently these gpu's will be roughly equal on all levels that matter.

Medium~
X-Box Next - HD-DVD Single Layer(15GB) - Hard Drive Optional
PS3 - Blu-Ray SL(25GB) - Hard Drive Likely to be Built-In

The next-gen formats are designed to provide higher storage capcity than DVDs.(4.7 GB single layer and 8.5 DL)
Single-layer HD-DVD discs are able to hold around 15Gb with the dual layer version holding around 30Gb. Single-layer Blu-Ray discs are able to hold around 25Gb with the dual layer version holding around 50Gb.

It is all too apparent that the PS3 trumps the x-box next at every turn. The Only level ground is with their GPU's but w/out the x-box next's specs being up to par; PS3 will take the lead there too.

Bottom Line~
PS3 WILL be Superior(will it be?) to X-box360(but in all fairness wont have Halo)

As for the Nintendo Revolution - it looks as tho it may not be quite up to par with either, but it still is the only system that has Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Mario and a handful of other awesome characters so all true gamers will buy it anyway.

PS3 all the way, this year i know sony is going to kis microsofts ass caz they are launching it at the same time. unlike last time where ps2 came out 3 years b4 xobx so xbox had a major advantage.
