NEC Burner and NSS question

I've got the NEC 6500A burner with my 9300. I read the user's manual and it said that the burner WILL NOT burn DVD-R or DVD-RW properly. What are the experiences of people on this forum?

Second question is about the Notebook System Software:
Has anyone noticed any benefit whatsoever of installing the Notebook System Software? I've got WinXP Pro with SP2, which theoretically means I can do without the NSS, but is there some chance that the NSS contains better drivers, updated stuff?? Anything at all?

Thank y'all

I'm burning Ritek G4 -R 4X disks with no problems on that drive. Done a few movies and some data backups, both work on my other DVD drive and the movies work fine on both of my DVD players.

Check the dell site for the new firmware upgrade for that drive, supposedly it fixes compatibility problems with some disks. Mine had no problems before the flash though.

I flashed mine with the 2.24 drivers that get rid of riplock and put rpc-1 on it.

Been running windoze XP SP2 for a while now without using the notebook system software. Everything works A-ok without it.

Same here, running SP2 without NSS, no problems. I believe the NSS is simply for hardware support (SD slot, USB2.0) no matter which version of XP is running. Naturally Dell has to play it safe with compatibility. I wouldnt' think it would contain software updates.

My 9300 came with the sony dvd drive. I had problems with it it was humming real loud and wouldn't reconize dvd's i burned. Sometimes it would burn dvd-r disk but not +r disk. So i called Dell and they send me out a replacement that was a NEC and this drive reads and writes every media i personally use Sony's blank media write speed from 1x to 8x media. But i tried different brands and the NEC works great.
