WiFi?

Thread Starter
Can someone give a better description of the WiFi/Access Point that comes w/ the 8886/7. Maybe a nice picture of the unit.

Right now the one we are giving out if someone selects the wireless access point in the system builder is the Linksys WAP11.
We usually use Connectgear, but their most recent shipment had some issues so we're shipping Linksys with the systems. We also ship it with the WPC11 PCMCIA card if the AP is purchased. Otherwise, if they just choose the PCMCIA card, we send the Connectgear one.

If I choose integrated wireless and access point is it the linksys that is sent as well?
That's the PCMCIA one right? Or does the same apply to the mini-pci?

Integrated wreless+Access point = internal MiniPCI card and Linksys WAP11

PCMCIA+ Access point = external PCMCIA card and Linksys WAP11

The 8886 doesn't have the built in antenna right now.

So the mini-pci card is also a linksys? I don't know much about wireless, lol, I'm assuming that the card and the access point are generally sold as the same brand? (but others can still work with each other as long as the specs are compatable?)

Thanks for the response
I am assuming that the miniPCI is 802.11b, could this be swapped out down the line for something 802.11g if I were so inclined and such a thing became available? Or is it something that is non-upgradeable?

Thanks

No, I'm not sure what brand the MiniPCI card is actually. I'll be able to tell you when we get the demo in.

I don't think 802.11g comes in the minipci form factor. Best of luck though!

Thanks PCTorque :-)

I think these people are working on it:

I don't know if it's available in any form.

Cheers.

Now that would be sweet... that or an a/b card that accepts dual channel. UD has both, lol, and people can have either card or a dual depending on where they'll use their laptop. I'd love to be able to take my 8887 around and use it anywhere :-)

Hmm buffallo has beat everybody to market with an 802.11g pcmcia card, now time for first 802.11g minipci.. 54 bucks is not a bad price for a wireless card though at the fastest standard though...
and backward compatible with 802.11b I might be getting 1 of these babies, buffalo isnt too bad of a company.. really want 1 of their bazooka antennas to attach to the side of my house LOL.. just kidding those things are crazy..

Buffalo also says that while the 802.11g standard is still not certified yet and may be subject to change but if it does, they will upgrade or replace at no charge.

That's sweet... and if the standard changes when it gets standardized officially, "BuffaloTech will replace or upgrade any of those products at no charge and provide toll-free technical support." :-) I like...
