Let's put it to a vote shall we? I've read alot of different POV's, so...

When you get a new dell, is it better to reformat or uninstall the bloatware?

Reformat if you're a power user, leave it if you're a user. There's no shame, I take my car to the shop, and my body to the doc, with my laptop, I am the mechanic.

Yeah, I love hearing from all the power users on this forum after they reformat. "My DVD playback is choppy." Well, yeah, you deleted your MPEG decoder. "How do I change the LED colors." Uh, you deleted your QuickSet utility, didn't you? "How do I burn a CD image of my original OS?" Uh, you deleted the CABs. "What happened to the scroll regions on my touch pad?" Hmm, perhaps you deleted your ALPS driver.

Etc.

I like installing everything on my computer myself, that way I know all the details.....

dellbert:
Even the most experienced users still run in to small issues and problems, use your driver cd and everything will be ok. And if not, go to DELL's website and download what they tell you you need. Simple fixes for small problems that you say power users have.

Reformat.

I like to be as much in charge as I can be of what's installed on my computer. Ok, so I'm a wee bit paranoid

Where do you get CPU drivers?

In my opinion, I did not see a big advantage in ripping EVERYTHING out and starting again. A little time spent examining the system and fixing up the registry as needed is educational and less risky (for most) than just scrapping the whole thing only to find that you have made more problems for yourself.

"If it aint broken, dont fix it!"

for me, i need to install multi os and partition my harddrive, so reformating is a must.

this time I wont reformatt.

I am too far behind the power curve of all the new toys and gadgets in modern computers. My power user days ended in '1996. SInce then, I have just been a "user". in recent years, I built on desktop, and reformatted once. both not worth the trouble.

I am convinced by reading these boards in detail, that i will be satisfied by just turning off stuff on msconfig. (I do know how to use that)

Even though I know I could get more, I could overcloack, apply 3rd party drivers/tweaks etc.. this laptop, stock out of the box will so crush my 2gig AMD, pc2100(?2300? who knows) 1 gig ram 65mb geforce with 2 broken cd burners, no functioniing floppy, reboots itself whenever I want to turn it off computer... that I will be in heaven, even with a sub 5000 benchmark.

After some time, when I get comfortable in this millenia's technology, I might mess around with it.

I just want to open the box, get the router hooked up, install Planetside, and play with greater than 15fps in a decent fight.

maybe when you find those you can mess with 'em so we got 3rd party CPU drivers that will FLY and perhaps do my laundry too! oh man lol.

Definatly reformat, a nice clean start. That way I know everything that has been changed.

It really depends on what level of user you are though, if you know how to do it then why not, if you don't then you should probably leave it be (unless you want to learn - learn as in reading and trial and error, not asking questions every 5 mins that you could find answers for yourself in less time it took to ask the question).

Sounds like -my own- personal favorite. . ."I just formatted my computer, but I can't get to any of my music anymore! All 4,000 songs have just DISAPPEARED!! I'm freaking out, but I know there's a way to find them. . .do you know?"

It's tough explaining to a music addict (like myself) how they're never going to get those 4,000 songs back. . . .Unless they pay $30 for a 'recovery' program. "No dude, forget that. I'm not paying $30 to get that junk back".

Yea, I think they stopped using their computer after that. They just forgot that whole "music" thing. . .haha.

Reformat, especially since I ordered my 9300 with XP Home and then put on Xp Pro. I like everything nice and clean!

Reformat, no question. I've been doing this stuff for years (A+ certified too), and it's not hard to do at all. The machine will run better for sure.

The whole thing was quite painless and I didn't run into any problems. I mean when I first started the computer, there were 50+ processes! And I didn't know what half of them were! What type of gains did I get performance wise? My computer starts up and shuts down much quicker. I got better scores in 3DMark05 (not really that great since it is a 'synthetic' benchmark). And I got higher FPS in CS:S (I actually tested this). Anyways, I love my 9300.

So do you guys put the Quickset back on? Even though I did the reformat I still like the power control scheme. Also, the media buttons on the front require it as well?
Yes, install Quickset for the media buttons.
