ATI Catalyst 5.5

Is this a version that will install without modification for the Mobility chipsets, or does it still need to have an install mod tool applied?

Thanks!

It won't install, it's the same as 5.4 and those before it. It's crap anyway, at least for me. Everything seemed fine until I checked out Half-Life 2, which crashed every time I tried to load it. Oh well, back to 5.4 for me. Hopefully ATI gets their act together and unveils the Mobility drivers sometime soon.

It will install if you know what you are doing, it isn't rocket science to do that, and halflife2 works fine here......

Did you notice any improvement?

does this make the temp get hotter?

Hi, not noticed any improvements, benchmarks I've seen don't seem to indicate much differences. Not sure what you mean by temp bladerunner168....

Dude. If I know what I'm doing? I was responding to a question, thanks for you insult. Of course it installs, you just have to mod it. And that's what I did. Corycoop was asking if it's available for installing without modding, which will be an option soon, and I responded to THAT. Half-Life 2 works, but after playing around with it for a little crapped out on me for various settings. What might not work for me might work for you, so watch yourself in the insults, alright?

Errr, what insult was that???

I'd agree that your reply, chriscatt, while not outright insulting was a little smarmy. "If you know what you're doing" implies that people don't know what they're doing (i.e. are not savvy). I generally prefer to assume that people DO know what they're doing, unless they prove otherwise.

In any case, as you might have seen from my post, I'm well aware of modding drivers. I've done so in the past, and might do so again in the future, but ATI has publicly stated that they will be releasing drivers for their Mobility chipsets that won't need modding. I simply wanted to know if the 5.5s were the first arrival of those.

A simple "Nope, they still need modding." would have sufficed.

Thanks for the info, though! I won't be bothering with this set.

corycoop, sorry but you are under a miscomprehension, my reply wasn't to you but to airscottie, who was stating that they won't install, no offence intended.

Did you read my repost? I wasn't saying it wouldn't install, I was saying that it wouldn't install WITHOUT modding. My post was in direct response to Corycoop. I can't believe this ridiculous bickering has gone as far as it has (probably a good deal my fault, too).

Hi, airscottie, I didn't think anyone was bickering really so I'll say to you also that was no offence intended as well. However you are also under a miscomprehension, these drivers have never required to be 'modded' at all. All you need to do is perform a manual update of the driver through hardware, device manager, just like we used to do in the 'good' old days of NT really, modding is a alternative but not the bees end so to speak. I'd also like to know what lappy are you using as it's strange that you are having such issues with these drivers and I'm not.

Oh I know they're not "meant" to be modded, but they're also not meant to be used as Mobility drivers. Until very recently ATI's stance has been that they do not make new drivers for Mobility Radeon cards, and in order to use them a manual workaround was needed (i.e. modding, manual update, etc.).

My machine is an Acer 8104. It runs perfectly in almost every way except for the fact that it has a great inability to run new Catalyst drivers. Sometimes the releases work for me, sometimes they don't. I tried Omegas and DNA drivers as well, but I got less performance out of the Omegas (and buggy PowerPlay usage) than the modded ones and the DNA drivers completely crapped out my system. As far as modded drivers go, Half-Life 2 is always my test. If I load the game a few times and change some settings, if the drivers work I won't have any trouble. But with the new 5.5 drivers (and 5.3 and one other, for that matter) it quits in the middle of loading, shows a striped purple and black background, and refuses to let me continue with any kind of menu at all in the game. The 5.4 drivers work fine for me, so I guess I'll be sticking with those until 5.6 or the Mobility drivers are released, whichever comes first.

HI, what graphics card has that one got and what's the memory size? You're right about the mobilty drivers though, would make things a little easier when ATI bring eventually them out....

It has an ATI Mobility Radeon x700 with 128MB. Its function with some of the modded drivers has been sporatic, to say the least.
