Running XP Pro on compaq Presario 1700 Laptop. Connected a Sony 20" external monitor to the video port on back of the laptop. Trying to play a DVD from the LT. It will play on the LT LCD screen but will not play or even show up on the external monitor. Any assistance appreciated.

you have to go into ur video card settings, and there should be a tab for diplays. there u can choose which of the 2 displays (lappy or external) are on. just pluggin in the monitor doesnt work, u have to tell the computer to use that instead of the original

Thanks for the quick response. Couldn't seem to find the ' laptop or external' option. Went into Control Panel/Display/Settings/Advanced. Selected the external monitor, but the DVD movie still didn't show on the external monitor. Will keep plugging away.

You have an ATI card.

They are infamous for allowing video to show on only one of the two screens.

If you go into the advanced settings and then the tab that shows the TV, external screen, and LCD you just double click on the external screen.

In laymans language this sets that up as the default screen so to speek.

Keep in mind while you have this setting you will not see the video on your LCD, just that big black box.

I dont know if Nvidia cards have the same peculiarity but I have not read of posts complaining of such.

Try the function key and hit f4 it switches mine, sometimes I have to reboot but that is to get full screen on my TV.

no nvidia cards deal with this a lot better. That is one big drawback to the ATI cards
